From SketchUp to Second Life
writes "Roo Reynolds of Eightbar (an external blog written by some IBMers) has put together a tool to export Google SketchUp models and import them into Second Life. It only seems to work for fairly basic objects, and cylinders and non-rectangular surfaces 'are particularly badly hit.' Along with the Prim.Blender project, this sort of tool looks like it could make building in Second Life considerably easier, allowing people to choose their preferred tool rather than be constrained to the in-world editor." -
Friday at the Austin Game Conference
This year's AGC is now at an end, and several sites have coverage of the last day's events. The hit event for the day seemed to be Damion Schubert's Moving Beyond Men in Tights talk. MMORPG.com has a slew of interesting articles, covering Emerging PR Strategies for MMOGs, Running Your Own MMOG, and Rich Vogel on MMOG Betas. Raph has a liveblog on a session about Virtual Economies, and finally the 3pointD site has a look at a panel on Virtual Worlds. Interesting stuff. From the 'Men in Tights' writeup: "The queston to answer, why do we keep making grindtastic classbased combat oriented men in tights gamey games? I'm not going to answer 'because it sells' because it's a circular argument and a copout. We won't get anywhere if we only do what was done before. Instead, I'll ask why do we need a grind, why do games appear to be winning, why are classes good, and so on. The reason to tackle this is because whenever people decide to make a new game, these are often the first five things people choose to innovate on. But there's a lot of bad innovation from people trying to solve these five problems." -
The Beautiful Chaos of 1,000 Trackmania Racers
Mark Wallace writes "This 3-minute video of 1,000 runs of the same Trackmania Sunrise road course, overlaid on each other, turns the game into a gorgeous picture of an ordered system tending toward chaos. The pack starts out in perfect shape and becomes a glorious mess by the end of the course. Plus, it's just beautiful stuff." I'm normally not one for linking videos, but this is a great way to spend a few minutes on a Tuesday morning. -
Major League Baseball In Second Life
Jerry23 writes "There's apparently an upcoming Home Run Derby in the world of Second Life, sponsored by Major League Baseball and created by The Electric Sheep Company. In proto-interactive TV style, fans can tune their laptops to the multi-player recreation and chat with other Second Lifers while they watch the real deal on the tube. And of course they can also pop over to the virtual souvenir shop and drop some hard-earned loot on a pixelated jersey." From the article: "[T]he virtual derby will not be a separate contest, but will be 'a real-time Second Life re-enactment' of the real thing, featuring avatars for each of the eight Derby players -- Major Leaguers competing to see who can hit the most home runs over the course of two rounds."
