    Was Taco selling the Slash code? Was he claiming that it was for public release? No. He didn't release it. It was his code, and therefore his right. Do you get annoyed that Sun hasn't released source to [insert product name here]?

    Now, repeat after me, slowly, until you hear a loud 'ding' (the sound of CLUE) -- Source code is not a right. If I don't like it, I will write my own and GPL it.

    Of course, in Netscape's case, their products were (and STILL are) absolute crap, particularly the browser. It's ironic that the DOJ cited Microsoft giving away the browser, even though Netscape did that for years. Microsoft did screw up their argument, though. They should have argued that a browser is an expected utility in a modern operating system (same as Linux, Be, etc, etc), and they would have won. It was stupid to distract everyone with the "it can't be removed" argument.

    Technically, you're wrong. Until Micro$oft forced Nutscrape to make the browser free (IE 3.0, I think), Navigator was /not/ free. You could download a free trial, but if you continued to use it past 30 days, you were legally obligated to shell out to Netscape. That's what forced them to make nav free -- businesses would use IE to avoid paying netscape to make 3000 desktops legal.

    OK. This is reading a bit too much into this, I believe. Looks to me like Katz decided it'd be fun to poke at a really bad movie. Nothing more.

    Why in the hell does everything have to be so damned complicated for you f**king people? Do you feel the need to find the conspiracy in everything. Yes, the people who post to the front page have opinions. That does not make them bad people, or less worthy of posting.

    And if you're wondering why this contest exists? It's because somebody decided it'd be fun. If you don't fuckin' like it, dont fuckin' read and quit your bitching, or go run your own site. We don't own /. Taco does. Get used to it.

    Um... have you been smoking? From a purely financial standpoint, that idea is very very bad. It doesn't make any sense to save money on bandwidth just to toss it to the ambulance chasers, and publicists (University of *** Encouraging Piracy! News at 11).

    So when are the SMP capable AMD chips going to come out (or did I just miss something)?

    AMD Athlons are based on the DEC^H^H^HCompaq Alpha EV6 bus. They are SMP capable. The AMD 750 chipset did not support SMP, however, nor does the VIA KX133 (IIRC). Chipsets and motherboards for SMP are coming -- Tyan has announced one for fall of this year.
