Theora for streamingIt's ironic to think of Theora as a "Real-killer", while it does compete on the same field as Real's proprietary video streaming codecs, Real is adopting Theora for the video format in their Helix suite (and throwing money at Xiph to help get Theora out faster).
I've seen Theora be streamed with Icecast (check out the last Ogg Traffic), I've seen decent quality Theora video at 80kbps (320x240@30 even), and I've seen how well it works in an Ogg container, vs Quicktime/AVI which (unlike Ogg) were not designed for streaming.
But don't take my word for it, try it out for yourself! That's one of the reasons the Alpha releases are available to the general public. See what it can do, and prehaps, drop us a donation through Paypal or Affero to help the Theora hackers spend more time hacking.

Re:It would be interesting
"It would be interesting to see a project allow those who donate to vote on what the money went towards."
Haven't you joined Affero lately?
Seriously, Affero is an interesting concept, whereby your helpful code, suggestions, usenet posts, emails, etc. can be rated by people within the community that benefit from that help, and donations given by those individuals gets contributed to the organizations of their choice. The developer/user themselves gets 0% of the donation, 100% of it goes to other organizations, such as the FSF, EFF, Software Libre, and so on.
If this has helped you in any way, please take the time to rate the value of this post: http://rate.affero.net/hacker/

Affero
I realized after writing that (rather hastily as I still need to finish packing for a two-week trip starting at 6 AM tomorrow morning) that I didn't offer any answer at all to the original question. So let me introduce you to another interesting rating mechanism, Affero, which enables you to rate others who help you out by essentially donating to causes they believe in. For example, if this helps you at all, you can rate me.

Re:Creating cashflow -- Affero
Perhaps we should start designing a system to get voluntary payments from users to hackers?
Yup ! Great idea - and as usual with great ideas, already been done - check out Affero.

If you REALLY want to buy the book
Then maybe you should get it from Amazon, where it is $12 cheaper.
Please Rob, explain to us how whatever deal you have with bn.com is worth your user base overpaying by so much? Users can buy the book through the link above, and I will put a third of my affiliate commission (about $1.40 per copy) towards Perl development projects. This way everybody wins. Using your link, I assume you win, and that bn wins, but your loyal user base is out an additional $12 and I can't imagine your deal with bn.com nets you that much for providing the link.
