Re:One of the most proprietary?
Every release of Solaris ships with a companion CD which contains lots of GNU tools, including GCC, GNU make, autoconf etc. Also included on this CD comes KDE and GNOME.
Recent releases, sure. That CD also comes with Apache, which caused Peter van der Linden to whine on internal Sun newsgroups about how it was "competing" with iPlanet and that Sun should remove Apache and spread FUD. HAHA. A rotting dog turd competes with iPlanet.

Re:Perl: Fitting into the Big Picture
Java does everything that C++ does
Uh, no. Thanks for playing. There are things that C++ does that Java does not -- some of which I'm thankful do not exist in Java (preprocessor) and some of which I miss (generics). But despite its C-like syntax and superficial resemblances (finalizers seem like destructors but aren't) Java is more like Smalltalk than C++.
Take a quick gander the section For C, C++ Fans in Peter van der Linden's Java Programmers FAQ
But then, why am I arguing over the relative merits of Perl, Java, C++, and C# with a user having the handle "Microsoft Research" who posts pure FUD? -
Hack a Furby
The challenge may have been won, already, but the price meets your criteria. Maybe you could add memory, install Linux and make it your personal slave. All that love and at garage sale prices, too!

Re:Open Source DRM? Shareware Music?
This really is a wonderful idea, and I love it... but how long will it take before this is hacked?
If they can make a furby talk english they can also hack this... ;-)
I also think that most people that love music or the band will buy their music, and the people that pirate it would never have bought it in the first place, so why spend millions of dollars on some kind of encryption that will be hacked in a few weeks (at most) anyway? -
Hack!
Let's put it this way if they can make a furby talk english
I rest my case -
