On Building Massive Data Storage Systems...
datazone asks: "I know there are companies that provide data storage solutions, but they are very expensive. Has anyone built anything in the range of 1TB or more of storage? What sort of hardware & software configuration would be used and was it worth it in the long run after taking the time, money and support into consideration?" -
Amiga Inc. Files Multiprocessing Patent
Pappy writes " It looks as if Amiga Inc's development wing has filed a patent involving a very unique Multiprocessing scheme, in which groups of processors are thrown into 'Clusters', as well as coming up with a interesting Bus-Arbitration scheme for Multiple Processor groups. Check out the patent online. " Given this, the political movements with Linux, and the recent silence, I'm inclined to think of the Tom Waits song: "What's he doing in there?" -
nVidia's GeForce 256 Breaks Out; changes 3D world
Hai Nguyen writes " nVidia officially unveiled the GeForce 256 (the chip formerly known as NV10). Its architecture emphasizes both triangle rate and fill rate, so the chip can render 3D landscape with highly detailed 3D environments and models, and smooth framerates. Go get the full info." Holy moses. I want one. Now. -
Linux/Mesa 3D Game Beta
Steve Baker writes "Tux-the-Penguin - A Quest for Herring. A full 3D game for Linux/OpenGL (Mesa). Released with full source code under GPL. This is a first public beta and the start of a web-based project to bring this to completion. What's available now is a couple of playable levels. You *WILL* need a 3D accelerator that Linux can support under OpenGL (that pretty much means a Voodoo-1 or 2 or a RUSH). -

DOJ Shifts Tactics in their Case Against MS
Frank Earl writes "Today ZDNet reported that the DOJ is taking a different track in their case against Microsoft. Seems that they're broadening it in one way and narrowing the focus in another- they're now claiming that MS used the exclusionary contracts with ISPs and PC manufacturers along with the integration of IE into Windows in an attempt to shore up their monopoly. Apparently they've got proof from all the stuff they've been gathering in the research of the Anti-Trust case. Seems the DOJ's going more for the jugular now on MS- if they can prove this one, it's going to be very hard for MS to get an appeal to work like they did the last case." -
Another Journalist Tries Linux
Frank Earl writes "Here's another "computer journalist" that is going to go "all Linux" for a month's time... This time it's the Boston Globe's journalist, Hiawatha Bray. Here's his editorial and here's his site where he's planning on posting updates on his progress. It'll be interesting where all this sort of stuff is going to be leading in another 6 months to two years from now... " -
Assorted Tidbits
Each of these is pretty important and probably warrents its own post, buuut we've had a ton of articles posted already today, and these are pretty notable, so: I)ruid asked me to plug C Scene, a nice little E-zine devoted to C and C++ programming. Chris Short sent us this link where you can read the results of a shocking government study:After much research (and spending of tax payers money) they confirm that the web is growing! Wow. Amazing.Andy Tai wrote in to tell us that another Open Source web site has arrived, this one is The Open Source Journal. Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that there are suddenly dozens of web sites focused on this stuff? It seems like a lot of duplication of effort is occuring. I'm all for variety, but a dozen decent sites could combine forces to create one super site.
Next, Adam Keys wrote in to tell us that Apple Posted a $55 million profit this quarter. Lastly we have this link, sent to us by Dave Blondell, where you can read about Linux at Comdex 98, and a few other related Chicago/Spring Comdex area events.

GTE Network Services to offer ADSL service
Frank Earl writes "According to ZD's Anchordesk, GTE is planning to roll out ADSL services in 30 some metro areas throughout the rest of this year. Cost is supposed to be something on the order of $30 per month, not including install charges and rental of the equipment (since the equipment is standard and not *THAT* expensive, expect the stuff popping up for sale in the areas that GTE offers it- just like the ISDN hardware did when the local Telcos wised up some on that.) For some, at least, the pipe's about to get better and faster. " -
Mod_TCL Released
Another cool module for the worlds most popular web server. mod_tcl does for TCL what mod_perl does for perl. Thanks to Frank Earl who wrote in to let us know this. -

Bill's Driveway
Get ready to be amazed... Partisan sent us this link over to Driveways.com where you can see driveways of the rich and famous. This one has an interview with Bill's Gatekeeper, and his next door neighbor. It's pretty bizarre, not so much because of Bill Gates, but because there actually is a web site that cares. Oh, wait. I just posted an article about it. I guess that means 2 web sites care.
