Linux On Alpha To Power Streaming Media Boxes
This CNET article, found at the new and itchin'-for-eyeballs AlphaNews site run by the AlphaLinux folks, says that Alpha Processor International (API) will be producing specialty boxes delivering streaming audio and video starting this Fall. "Alpha Processor's new machine will consist of a collection of smaller, two-processor Alpha computers, each running its own copy of Linux but the whole system acting essentially as a single large server," says the article, pointing out too that there already are Alpha-based dedicated streaming boxes from Network Appliances. Anything that increases Alpha production seems good to me, if it drives down the price of being 64-bit. Wonder what distro all those CPUs will be running ... -
Oracle 8 for Alphalinux
xose writes "A source inside Compaq has revealed to alphalinux.org that Oracle is porting its Oracle 8 database to AlphaLinux., with an expected release data in Q1,1999. So we now have the commitment or a major database vendor to AlphaLinux. This source has also told us that several other 1st tier ISV now consider AlphaLinux to be a strategic platform." -

Barrett Lyon writes "The new and improved Alpha Linux web site is now up. This site replaces the original on Azstarnet, left behind by David Mosberger-Tang and Bob Cauthorn. The site promotes Linux on Alpha architecture and also holds archives of AXP Linux Documents, Mailing Lists, Software, Hardware, Howto Docs, and Links. Oh, and of course the site is hosted on a Alpha Linux machine ;) " And it looks awesome. -
