WikiThe RPG development group "Altima" uses a program called Wiki to develop their website in an open manner. The software allows people to collectively develop web pages.
To be able to work on their website you need to be assigned an account and password, which allows editing access to some subset of the site (e.g., you could be allowed to make pages under the "game world" area, or under the "server coding" section).
You are allowed to edit the main body of the page, but not the header or footer (only people with "admin" priv's can edit those). This way, the overall look of every page can be maintained consistently, while the page authors are allowed to do pretty much whatever they want.
Editing is done entirely through a web form, making it possible for just about anyone to work on the site. Also, it has a text -> HTML converter in it, so if you don't know HTML you're not totally stuck (though if you do know HTML you can make good use of it.)

value of learning
It's amazing how much more one learns while
working on a net project, than one learns in
the course of their day to day job. There is
a noticeable distinction between commercial
"do it quickly" and the "do it right" approach
in net projects.

Free Software Movement
There are some very interesting parallels
between the rise of the scientific community
back in the 17th century.
I expect we'll see more and more of these sorts
of lists populated by people of the Free Software
Movement. Yay!

Freedom is all that matters
Personally, I've yet to hear much serious
mention of this "Inferno" thing, and unless it
is freely available, in spite of its quality
(almost assured, given the caliber of people
working on it), will probably go no where being
non-free. 8-|

Scripting languages
The game ain't ready for use yet, but one of Altima's planned core features is the ability to "script" one's character. It isn't aimed at being a teaching aid, but it might provide an encouragement to young people to pick up programming.
Altima is planning on using Python. That'a a good language to start with, IMHO, and I've suggested it to a few proto-programmers just recently myself. Cross platform, free, good documentation, simple syntax, useful for a variety of applications, it's not a bad language.

Sealing their own doom
With the current attention on Linux, this is
not the sort of PR MS wants out. It's the
exact opposite of their usual vaporware promises.
They're doing more to help Linux achieve world
domination than any other company. Thank you
Bill!
