InfogramesAtari is also the French Infogrames company. I remember buying one of their games... Monopoly, I think.
It was not too terribly great, as the animations were lousy and the computer AI would gang up on you.

Re:What is the patent?I think the patent is this one. At least, it's mentioned here. It's really crazy, it truly is a patent on the principle of hashing (when done in "a data processing system").
Here is the first claim of the patent:
1. In a data processing system, an apparatus comprising:
identity means for determining, for any of a plurality of data items present in the system, a substantially unique identifier, the identifier being determined using and depending on all of the data in the data item and only the data in the data item, whereby two identical data items in the system will have the same identifier; and
existence means for determining whether a particular data item is present in the system, by examining the identifiers of the plurality of data items.

Re:Only ifIt more or less already exists, it's called Altnet and is installed together with Kazaa. Their website claims that the Altnet network has millions of computers.
For more serious applications I doubt that you want to send your confidential data for computation on some random stranger's computer, given the amount of viruses, trojans etc. that are in circulation today and how "good" ordinary users are at keeping their systems secure. Encryption won't help as long as the computer is under full control of the user. Something like DRM could probably solve that problem however.

Kazaa absuing the patent systemKazaa affiliate Altnet seem to be going down the abusive patent path. I just posted a story on this subject to K5, here is the opening paragraph:
Altnet, the company that brought us spyware, recently acquired a patent which allows easy identification of files on a P2P network. In the words of Derek Broes, Altnet's executive vice president of worldwide operations, Altnet will "...focus on protecting and commercializing our patented technology and realizing the potential it offers content owners by commercializing peer-to-peer networks". Just another day in the world of little-league software companies you think. Not so.
