Announcing Adafruit Gemma – Miniature Wearable Electronic Platform
coop0030 writes "Open source hardware company Adafruit has announced a new tiny wearable electronics platform board called the Gemma. The Gemma is a tiny, 1-inch diameter and 4-mm thick package. It's powered by an Attiny85 and programmable with an Arduino IDE over USB. There are three available I/O pins, one of which is also an analog input and two of which can do PWM output. Gemma is currently wrapping up development, but should be available soon." -
Open Source Operating System For Smart Cards
Scott writes "The OSNews site refers to a new open source operating system for smart cards, and more specifically adapted for contactless and dual-interface chips. This operating system named jayaCard ('success card' in malaysian ?) is compatible with ISO 7816 and ISO 14443. It is currently ported to freely available microprocessor like the ATmega161/162 from Atmel. A simulator version for Windows and Linux is already available and the full cleanroom source code can be inspected at Sourceforge. It should be noted also that although still in alpha version, this software is more complete, more standard, more complex but as more ambitious as SOSSE, the first available OS of this type." -
First LEON Silicon Tested Successfully
uglomera writes: "LEON, the open-source CPU developed for the European Space Agency, has been successfully manufactured and tested by Atmel on an Atmel ATC35. Gaisler Research, whose CEO Jiri Gaisler wrote the VHDL model of LEON, also offers a real time kernel, simulator, a cross-compiler, etc. for this SPARC-family processor designed for space applications. Boogie Bass Hacked
vonmar writes "A 20-second re-recordable message has been hacked into the "Boogie Bass" talking fish. The audio is stored on an ISD 1420P solid-state chipcorder voice record/playback chip. The head, tail, and mouth movements are also re-recordable, and are stored in EEPROM inside an ATMEL AT89S8252 microcontroller. Read more about it at the creator's site." -

A complete single-chip solution IC, featuring Embedded Linux and application software delivering true telephone sound quality." We've been saying for some time that embedded boxes are one of the strongest futures for that whole Linux thing. I'm still waiting to see one of these little Linux boxes make it to the market ...
