Another English/Metric "Spacecraft" Problem
SuperDry writes "There's been another spacecraft failure that's been attributed to an English/Metric units problem, this time at Tokyo Disneyland's Space Mountain. An axle broke on a "spacecraft" (a.k.a. roller coaster train) mid-ride, causing it to derail (nobody was hurt). The final investigation report has been released, and the root cause has been determined to be a part being the wrong size due to a conversion of the master plans in 1995 from English units to Metric units. In 2002, new axles were mistakenly ordered using the pre-1995 English specifications instead of the current Metric specifications. Apparently size does matter, even if it's only a 0.86mm difference." -
Microsoft Sued for Defective Software

Turbolinux Not Dead Yet
Abdul Nabi writes "I found this article on Linux Today which is a response from Turbolinux to the recent rumors of a shutdown. The responds contends that they are restructuring rather than shutting down." Ya know, I can't think of a single person that I know that runs Turbolinux. Maybe that has something to do with their problems. -
Questions to Ask University CS Departments?
egarrido16 asks: "I will be visiting numerous undergraduate colleges over the next several months and meeting with the chairpeople of the computer science departments. I need to come up with some questions to ask them so that I can evaluate their methods of teaching CS (i.e. 'Does this college believe programming is a fundamental or is it more of a tool?'). Reflecting upon your experience, what questions do you think would be necessary to ask to decide what the educators feel is important in a CS curriculum?" -
Small Form LCD Projectors?
HRieke asks: "Does anyone know as to where to buy low power LCD projectors or parts? I have two needs on this matter: I am computerizing my car in conjunction with my Master's thesis (if approved), the second as a wall video display. Ideally, I would use the device with a PC in the trunk, or LART . My idea is to have the a display projected on the windshield, from over the left shoulder, displaying realtime IR images, possible hazards, and GPS location, at a low lumens level, and for the unit to have small power requirements / low heat waste. Resolution is not that important, 800x600x16bbp is ideal, but I'd settle for even for 640x480x8bbp. After searching a bit, I found the DLP units from Texas Instruments. Be sure to look at the DLP image library too. Are there any other projectors like these?"
