Time to get a decent antivirus
I can recommend an excellent antivirus solution - AVP (AntiVirus Protection), a prize-winning and blah-blah-blah. It is a policy of the company that protecting the public from viruses is more important than maximizing their own profits, which is why they intentionally allow pirated copies of their program to download regular updates. Think which company would you rather trust the well-being of your PCs - Symantec that is willing to implement a potentially risky product activation or Kaspersky Lab? Don't forget, any product activation system may crash eventually, just like MS systems did, and you will not be able to enable your antivirus for hours or even days. It would be really helpful for writers of the NextBigVirus to DDoS Symantec product activation servers, not Windows Update...
BTW, the creators (Kaspersky Lab.) also maintain a great online virus encyclopedia. -
Re:"commercial competition"
There are several sucessful software companies in Russia, this and this come to mind. The first one writes antivirus software, the second one office and OCR tools.
It is possible to develop competetive software and make money in Russia, even maybe a little bit easyer than in the west, because most software developers are quite happy with 500 USD per month (this is 6000 USD per year!). The software can be delivered electronically to the clients so the company has much smaller expenses than a similar US company. -
Re:Protection?Yes - well, sort of. There are plenty of anti-virus programs out there, such as:
and so on. Symantec/Norton also has a Linux/UNIX binary which is certainly bundled with the network-wide thing, I don't know if it's available separately. The trouble with all of these things is that although they are Linux applications, they detect Windows virii - they use the same signature files as the versions on other platforms do. This means they're very good for running on file/e-mail servers to protect the poor Windows machines behind them (which is what they're intended for) but they probably won't stop the subject of this post, for example. Basically, yes, they exist and work well but make sure you know what you're hoping for them to do...

open market for better AV's?
I wonder. Take Kaspersky antivirus. From what i hear, it's better. I don't see it starting to dominate the market.
This privacy issue is currently too marginal. -
Antiviral Toolkit Pro
I would be real interested in see them enforce their patent on the makers of Antiviral Toolkit Pro. However I'm sure they will approach the Russian Mafia and ask advice.....

maybe not as bad as you think...Why doe this matter? If you want to use this technology, just set up your server outside the US.
Anyway it's not only US companies make anti virtual software.
I know that you'll think its just another foreigner moaning, but if you think about it, its not really as bad as you think.

Kaspersky Anti-VirusI personally have used Kaspersky Antivirus. (If the US site is down, you can also try the Russian Site).
I discovered this from a page which covers exactly what you are looking for. The page is here.
