Nintendo Buys Bandai Shares, Prompts Merger Speculation
Thanks to Reuters for their story that Nintendo have purchased over 1 million Bandai shares, making them one of Gundam creator and toy/game/film company Bandai's top 10 shareholders. A spokesman "...said Nintendo, the maker of GameCube home video consoles, which did not own any shares in Bandai as of March, has no intention of acquiring the toymaker", but GamesAreFun relay Japanese tabloid rumors that "a full-on merger between the two groups could take place sometime in the future." But it may be more likely, Video-Fenky points out, that "it's a move on Nintendo's part to win Bandai closer to their side and get them to release Gundam and Super Robot Taisen games... on their machine." -

Gundam Online - 160,000 Simultaneous Connections?
Hido writes "A new PC MMO title called Gundam Online: Universal Century is being developed in Japan by Bandai and Sammy , and is currently in its beta testing stage. The site says: 'We are trying pretty stimulating thing such as 160,000 people's simultaneous connection, a seamless space expression, reappearance of earth area in a full scale, and real-time-transmission in the specifications.' Quite apart from the wonderfully descriptive Engrish on the official site, has anyone seen, translated, or otherwise checked out Beta reports from this MMO title? -
Bandai to develop online games for cell phones
whostudios writes "There's quite an interesting story on CNN about Bandai and cellular service provider NTT Mobile Communications Network (NTT DoCoMo) teaming up to develop online video games for cell phones. From next month, the two companies will begin preparing around 20 of Bandai's gaming titles to run on NTT DoCoMo's new "i-mode" cellular handsets which the carrier is jointly developing with Sun Microsystems, representatives at the companies said today. "
