Open Source/Open Science
Stephen Adler (the guy who always does really cool write-ups of various events) writes "A one day conference titled Open Source/Open Science will be held at Brookhaven National Laboratory on October 2nd, which will focus on the use of Open Source in science. This is a pre-announcement so that the organizing committee may be able to better gauge community interest in attending. The full text can be found on the conference web page. " -

Linus at Fermilab: A report of the event
Dan Yocum (Hi Dan!) writes "Well, since Comdex is over and there isn't much threat of me getting whacked by their mob, I guess I can point people to a report of the "Linus at Fermilab" event, written up by Steven Adlerif they're interested. A pretty complete transcript of the event is included. The event was pretty technical and the report was written by a nuclear physicist, but it's still a pretty good read. " Update: 04/26 11:14 by H :Steve sent an update to let people take a look at his Comdex 99 update. -

Hump Day Quickies
Stephen Adler wrote a follow up to his article on the Slashdot Effect on the Meta Slashdot Effect. Its the effect of the article about the effect. I found it funny. Cheshire Cat sent us a link to Allcam.com which is a Yahoo-style page devoted solely to web cams. James Morris sent us a link to Linux Australia which has another tux logo. Jeff Hartmann sent us a link to a cute little Ice Penguin from Michigan Technological University's Winter Carnival '99. Surprised someone sobered up long enough to make it. MTU has a great campus though they need something besides snow cows. netweasel sent us a link to an Apple Ad that you will like. Patrik Rådman sent us a "pootified" version of slashdot. Adam Muntner sent us something that we all need: Virtual Crack zzg sent us a link to a bizarre page of cool stuff like ion guns and plasma pens (oh my) -

The Slashdot Effect Investigated
Grenamier writes "Stephen Adler analysed his httpd logs after he published some papers and had mentions made of them on Slashdot, freshmeat.org and linuxtoday.org. The results showed a pretty dramatic demonstration of the Slashdot Effect. " Where's the part where servers melt? Anyway, this amused me so I figured I'd share. -

Stephen Adler has writen up his experiences going to the NYSIA/WWWAC Software Summit and the presentations he attended: the Java Breakfast, the digital music panel, the free software panel with RMS, a CORBA talk and, the keynote panel on the future of the Internet/software industry over the next 5 years. Linux Used In New Atom Smasher
Phil Smyth writes "I toured the under-construction Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at an open house at Brookhaven National Laboratory yesterday. One of their systems people told me that they will be using a massive array of Pentium Pros running Red Hat to analyze the terabytes of data streaming from the experiments. NT was rejected because of the difficulty of administering the array. Incidentaly, the RHIC is an unbelivable piece of engineering. "
