Really Minimal
If you want a really minimal window manager for X, check out lwm. It's very small (23,508 bytes here), but does everything a window manager should do, and nothing that it shouldn't. More info. at http://www.boognish.org.uk/enh/lwm/. Check out some of his other X utilities too, some of them are very handy.

Re:Lightweight window managers
I'll second the lwm recommendation. My only gripe would be that it's pretty much impossible to use mouseless - I keep intending to hack some keyboard-friendly stuff in, but never seem to get around to (a) learning X and (b) getting around to it
:)I do believe that the (more recent) lwm homepage is at http://www.boognish.org.uk/enh/lwm/

Re:small and efficient
I use LWM. It's ultra small and provides a bare minimum of features. The only thing I miss (but not enough to bother hacking it in myself
andrew@endor:~> ls -l `which lwm` :) is the ability to just get a WM-drawn border when dragging a window around, rather than having the entire window drawn again and again and again..

lwm
You haven't seen lwm obviously then. It *is* small.

lwm
I've been using LWM for the longest time. It's extremely lightweight, blazing fast, and attractive. Very easy to control the running applications and whatnot. It's too austere for many people but I've grown fond of its speed. linkage

Re:a tiny window manager
Try this one. It compiles out to 36k on my system, while 9wm compiles to 41k.
Dunno which optimizations get 27k though...
