Re:Buddy collecting
Fortunately, using AIM to ask people out "for drinks" is your forte.
You'd be an interesting case, you should submit your list to this project. Then we could see what fraction of your buddy list consists of female, school-aged children.

I like it.
I think the design of the notebook is stylish (although the two tone thing is a bit off).
For anyone who does real work I think it's a great looking machine, and I'll probably buy one myself.
And yeah, I'm bucking the "waah, PowerBooks are better!" trend. I don't have 4 grand to spend on a 600 - 800MHz computer who's only lead in processing power / overall performance is photoshop filters.
Increased stability? My Inspiron 8100 runs FreeBSD.

Re:What about MacOS X?
When they say "passable MacOS version", do they mean Classic or MOSX?
They mean classic Mac OS. I got TiK to run on it once; here's a screen shot. There seemed to be no support for the menubar, or right-click contextual menus, or of course sound (since I believe TiK cats .au files to /dev/dsp). I'll see if the newer versions run better. -
Re:DSL Horror Stories? So, your main argument against DSL is that it's not available to everybody. This seems to piss off a lot of people for some reason. Limited availablity doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the technology, it just means not everyone can get it. Not everyone can get it means don't bitch at the companies offering it if your phone line doesn't qualify!
Keep in mind that many of the things you're complaining about - poor support, price gouging, complaints about what you're using the line for, networking multiple computers - are entirely dependent on the ISP you choose, and there are a LOT of ISPs to choose from, with different policies. If you don't like it, choose a different ISP.
Here's a rant against @Home that might interest you.
