Best Approaches for J2EE Certification?
facetiousprogrammer writes "I have been working for several years at the same company. As part of the 2007 goal, my team is required to get the Brainbench J2EE certification. We have a good knowledge of the Java programming language itself but very little exposure to J2EE. Other teams in the company are using J2EE daily — hence the push for certification. What would be the best approach to be successful in getting the J2EE certification knowing that we won't work or get formal training on J2EE? Is it a desperate cause?" -
Are On-Line Skills Assessments Worthwhile?
Dagum writes: "A couple of weeks ago, I applied to expertcity.com to try making a couple of extra bucks. Since I have never gotten around to taking any certification tests in any technical areas, they directed me to brainbench.com to take a couple of free tests in a couple of choice categories. The tests are adaptive, and they are usually 40 questions each. Since then, mostly for curiosity, I've racked up about 27 of them, the titles of at least ten of which actually would make me sound intelligent. Barring the usual griping over 'paper certifications' versus real-world experience, I am curious if any other people have tried any of these tests, if anyone can compare their testing experiences with these tests, if anyone has used other free skills assessment tools on the Web, and the general impressions of other participants." -
Are Free Certifications Helpful?
orangecat asks: "I just took the Linux Administration Certification test at brainbench.com, a company which provides free certification in many categories, both technical and non-technical. Would listing these free certifications on a resume be helpful, neutral, or a hindrance, particularly for someone with little or no relevant job experience, formal education, or "real" certifications? If so, are there any sites for free (or low cost) certification that are particularly recommended/respected?"
