As a "real" tandem person (see here), I must say this thing looks like a toy to me. Of course, it is also far less expensive than the bikes made by serious tandem bike companies, who often make bikes with derailer and brake systems that alone cost as much as this monstrosity.

We've had our tandem going 60-70mph (down mountain roads). There's no way I would trust this thing for such riding. Maybe it is OK for some gentle cruises, but that's it. And furthermore, there's a far better design for front-stoker visibility.

Bamboo bikes seem to be more likely. Although I don't see how its more environmentally friendly than a steel frame. Well cared for, it will last decades, and then it can become recycled and made into a new bike.

Bamboo is already making its way into bicycle frame design.

Just as stupid as bamboo and cardboard bikes. There's nothing wrong with using steel or aluminium for your bike frame. If you treat it right, it will last 20+ years, at which point it can be recycled into a new bike. Even if you leave it out in the rain, the frame will most likely still last 10+ years, its the rest of the components that really don't like rain that much.

Nor is there anything on his website to describe that either, after a quick gleaning and reading of the marketing pdf. I therefore blame Wired for a bad article and instead link the homepage of said bikes for further convenience.

I recently saw a bamboo bicycle and was blown away by the look and feel. A biodegradable frame built out of material known for thousands of years to be highly durable and strong.
