Ask Slashdot: ORB Drives, Anyone?
Chris Herborth asks: "Castlewood Systems is apparently shipping their ORB drive (you know, 2 gig removable cheaper than a 250MB ZIP drive, with media at $40) now to at least two US distributors (ASI) and (Wintec). So, has anyone seen one yet? How well does it work under non-Windows operating systems? I was going to invest in something useful for doing backups soon, but I'm afraid to just order one of these (shipping to/from Canada is a real pain in the butt) in case something goes wrong or it only works properly with Windows." Your thoughts, folks? -
ORB drives are claimed to be shipping
sumC writes "Those ORB drives are finaly shipping according to their manufacturer " This distributor's website appears to have them. I tried to phone them, but they're closed for lunch... -
Cool new toy
My new C'T arrived this week with an interesting review of the Orb, a removable MR medium which boasts 2.2 Gig per $29 cartridge, and should cost around $200. While that does make it more expensive than writable CD-Roms in bulk (400 for 338 on Pricewatch today) by a factor of 10, it would make a pretty neat backup-device, or linux-hacking-disk. Indeed with a 10-12 millisecond seek rate, burst transfer rates of 20Mb/s and 12.2Mb/s sustained, it's in the hard-disk league. S: Oops... repeat. Sorry. -

2Gig floppies for $30?
heller writes "Ok. I've been waiting almost 9 months for these 2G floppy drives at $30 per disk! Castlewood Systems has finally finished beta testing their ORB drives and is shipping them to OEMS, hopefully this means end users can buy them soon! I want one. Does this also count as the christmas presents for geeks? " I'd say so. These things look sweet. -
Cheap Big Storage
Karl J. Smith wrote in to tell us about The Orb. It is a cheap ($29.95 per cartridge) removable MR cartridge drive that stores 2.1 gigs per cart! I can't find a price for the drive itself but the faq says its cheap.
