The Oddball Side of CES (Video)
In between nodding earnestly as hopeful exhibitors told him how wonderful their products were, Slashdot's Timothy Lord took a look at some of the less-serious displays and goings-on at CES. Some of these people and companies no doubt take themselves 100% seriously, but after grueling days patrolling the endless exhibits at this giant show, Timothy was looking at them through tired (and cynical) eyes. This short video shows some of what he saw. -
RIAA President Decries Fair Use
triskaidekaphile writes, "Cary Sherman, president of the RIAA, has an editorial on CNet responding to the Consumer Electronics Association's support of the Digital Freedom campaign for fair use. Sherman proclaims, 'The fair use doctrine is in danger of losing its meaning and value.' Like a true spinner, he indicates that fair use is indeed important, then states 'Let's be clear. The CEA's primary concern is not consumers, but technology companies — often large, multinational corporations which, like us, strive to make a profit... But to seize the mantra of "consumer rights" to advance that business interest is simply disingenuous.' Slashdotters, trollers, and pollsters one and all, what say you? Disingenuous or dissembling?" -
Consumer Groups Protest SonicBlue/ReplayTV Order
bigmouth_strikes writes: "As a follow-up to this story about SonicBlue having to track ReplayTV usage, PC World reports how several privacy and consumer groups protest the court order. The Electronic Privacy Information Center will support and appeal and Consumer Electronics Association released a press release where they condemn monitoring individual users preferences. SonicBlue have until June 24 to put the tracking in action, and the data collected will determine whether the users of ReplayTV meet the "Fair Use" criteria established in the Betamax case."
