First Full Observable-Universe Simulation
First time accepted submitter slashmatteo writes "The goal of the DEUS project (Dark Energy Universe Simulation) is to investigate the imprints of dark energy on cosmic structure formation through high-performance numerical simulations. In order to do so, the project has conducted a simulation of the structuring of the entire observable universe, from the Big Bang to the present day. Thanks to the Curie super-computer, the simulation has made it possible to follow the evolution of 550 billion particles. Two other complementary runs are scheduled by the end of May. More details in the press release." -
CFH Telescope Gets New Wide-field Digital Camera
Pixie writes "The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, located on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, has begun using a new 350 MegaPixel, wide-field camera called MegaPrime. This new camera, designed collaboratively by NRC-HIA in Canada, CEA and Observatoire de Paris in France, and CFHT in the US, will provide astronomers with extrodinary wide-field views of the heavens. Official press releases available at CFHT, NRC-HIA and CEA." -

Fusion Reactor Sets New Endurance Record
!splut writes "Fusion fans out there will be interested to know that an experimental French fusion reactor has set a new duration record of 210 seconds. Most fusion reactor research works (or tries to) by containing and compressing a quantity of plasma via an electomagnetic field in a toroidial chamber. Fusion energy could potentially provide a a clean, efficient, and virtually inexhaustible source of energy, but fusion reactoins have proven difficult to contain and control, so this is a significant achievement."
