Probable Solution Found for ECC2-109 Challenge
kpearson writes "The eCompute ECC2-109 distributed computing project discovered a probable solution to Certicom's ECC2-109 challenge today. The challenge was to defeat a 109-bit Elliptic Curve Cryptosystem (ECC). Since the eCompute ECC2-109 project began on November 8, 2002, 1,981 volunteers have run the project's software and found almost 40.5 million distinguished points. From those points the project found two which matched and caused a collision, enabling the project to find a solution to the ECC. The solution was submitted to Certicom this morning for verification." -

NSA Turns To Commercial Software For Encryption
Roland Piquepaille writes "According to eWEEK, the National Security Agency (NSA) has picked a commercial solution for its encryption technology needs, instead on relying on its own proprietary code. "The National Security Agency has purchased a license for Certicom Corp.'s elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) system, and plans to make the technology a standard means of securing classified communications. In the case of the NSA deal, the agency wanted to use a 512-bit key for the ECC system. This is the equivalent of an RSA key of 15,360 bits." This summary includes the NIST guidelines for public key sizes and contains more details and links about the ECC technology. Since the announcement, Canadian Press reports that Certicom's shares more than doubled in Toronto." -

Weak Elliptic Curve Cryptography Brute-Forced
thegrommit writes "It seems one implementation of elliptic curve cryptography has been broken. It took four years to break a 109 bit key, but the contest sponsors (who provide encryption products for Cisco, Nortel and Palm among others) believe it's still impossible to break their 163 bit keys. The real question is, for how long?" Update: 11/07 01:59 GMT by T : Dan Kaminsky wrote to point out that the key here was really brute forced, and not broken -- that is, no fundamental flaw was discovered in the algorithm. -

Help solve Certicom's ECC Challenge and help ASF
The Elliptic Curve Discrete Logarithms project has made a generous proposal to the Apache Software Foundation: They are looking for help in solving part of Certicom's ECC Challenge. If they win, they will give donate $8000 of the $10000 prize to the ASF, with the remaining $2000 being divided between the 2 volunteers who find the match (so it's $1000 each). It's a cool challenge, a piece of cake to participate and it helps out your favorite server. -
