Mega Public WAN In Sydney
Chris Meder writes: "As posted on CFGN - The Nation , gibed by the recent unreasonable price hikes in Broadband connectivity in Australia, which come already after a strained relationship between Broadband users and the major telco/ISP Telstra BigPond Internet, a group of people in the largest Australian metropolitan city of Sydney have decided to form a city wide amateur wireless network. The team behind this clever idea have also put up a detailed graphical database of people interested and are still looking for more numbers to get this off the ground." This last part reminds me of the Global Access Wireless Database, as featured here. Update: 01/23 18:53 GMT by T : Reader Peter Mann wrote to point out that "there's a mailing list for a similar wireless project in Sydney at http://sydney.air.net.au." -

Telstra BigPond Backs Off Download Cap, For Now
Bandit writes: "CyberForces Gaming Nation over in Australia posted what can only be described as a retraction by Telstra BigPond in regards to their prior announcement to "cap" the previously unlimited broadband accounts to a mere 3gig per month.""Snip: 'Since June, Telstra has been reviewing Freedom Plan members' feedback in relation to their monthly 3GB allowance and this review is not yet complete. Whilst this review is in progress, Telstra BigPond has decided not to introduce the intended 3GB "Capping" and "Additional Usage'" options planned for 1 October 2001. It seems that instead Telstra has opted out for a further modifications to their now infamous AUP or the acceptable usage policy.'"

Multi-Million Dollar LAN Event In Germany
lmake writes: "I'm sure a few Slashdot readers have been to a few LAN events. Packed up their computer, hauled it down to the event, almost breaking their back carrying their 19" monitor just so they can play quake against 200 other people for the day. Well, those days may be over. Electronic Arts Germany is sponsoring a LAN event in Germany with a budget of 4 million DM (AUD $ 5,200,000). You won't need to bring your computer to this event, they will be provided. View the original article (in German) here Or Cyberforces Gaming Nation has a translation here." The translated page is also abbreviated quite a bit; the original version raises the interesting question of just who is going to pay for the 3,000 (!) PCs needed for the event. (Do you really need a PC for each player?) -
