Still in DMCA Prison
Let's go over the Sklyarov situation. Sklyarov is still in jail. In fact, he's still in Las Vegas, where he is being held without even a bail hearing, much less bail. The excuse given for not having a bail hearing when he was arrested on July 16 was that he was being immediately transferred to San Jose and would get a hearing there. Anyway, a recap of the protests: San Jose, more San Jose, New York, Seattle, Chicago writeup and Chicago pictures, Moscow writeup and Moscow photo and news coverage: New York Times, Business2.com. Wired has Washington's viewpoint - Representative Coble says "there have been very few complaints from intellectual property holders". Well, duh. Linuxplanet has an opinion piece exploring the Digital Millennium Rape Act. Finally EFF has written a letter to U.S. Attorney Mueller, asking for the U.S. to drop the charges against Sklyarov. It seems pretty doubtful that he will, since he won't want to be seen as soft on crime during his Senate confirmation hearings. -
RedHat Scores At Comdex!
Dave Blondell writes "Today at Comdex promptly at 11:30a.m. RedHat started handing out free CDs. by 11:32 the line was again a few hundred people long! The line had to be doglegged around a large booth at the end of the isle. RedHat people tried to move people along by walking down the line handing out CDs but this didn't seem to reduce the size of the line at all. This time I got pictures!!! You will find them at this location. These are raw and unsorted as they came out of the camera." -
Linux at Comdex
Dave Blondell writes "At Comdex, today, there was a line over a block long waiting to get a RedHat CD. This attracted the attention of several media people who had never heard of Linux before. Jon "maddog" Hall of Linux International was vary busy helping them all "see the light". Again, Chicagoland Linux Users Group With UIC will be hosting An evening with S.u.S.E. on Wednesday and an evening with Jon "maddog" Hall on Thursday. For address, travel info and times, take a look at this location." Hand shakes to everyone involved in making the Linux booth happen. Very cool. -
Assorted Tidbits
Each of these is pretty important and probably warrents its own post, buuut we've had a ton of articles posted already today, and these are pretty notable, so: I)ruid asked me to plug C Scene, a nice little E-zine devoted to C and C++ programming. Chris Short sent us this link where you can read the results of a shocking government study:After much research (and spending of tax payers money) they confirm that the web is growing! Wow. Amazing.Andy Tai wrote in to tell us that another Open Source web site has arrived, this one is The Open Source Journal. Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that there are suddenly dozens of web sites focused on this stuff? It seems like a lot of duplication of effort is occuring. I'm all for variety, but a dozen decent sites could combine forces to create one super site.
Next, Adam Keys wrote in to tell us that Apple Posted a $55 million profit this quarter. Lastly we have this link, sent to us by Dave Blondell, where you can read about Linux at Comdex 98, and a few other related Chicago/Spring Comdex area events.
