Gene Therapy Cures "Bubble Boy"
bofh31337 writes "NewScientist is reporting that Welsh boy Rhys Evans has been cured of the fatal severe combined immunodeficiency ("bubble boy") disease. The medical team, lead by Adrian Thrasher, was able to take the stem cells that give rise to immune cells from his bone marrow and add a normal copy of the gene to the stem cell using a retro virus. Seven months after treatment, Rhys was cured." -

Ultimate Stem Cell Discovered
bofh31337 writes "Newscientist is reporting that the University of Minnesota has discovered a new stem cell in adults. It is thought this stem cell will be able to turn into any single tissue in the body." The article is kinda breathy, especially for New Scientist - but if this is true, which needs to be studied more, this will dramatically alter the landscape for stem cell research. -

Any Linux Demo Hackers Bored?
Greg Hayes wrote in to say "A call went out for support of a port of the popular demo loader iXalance for linux." You can go to the TBL homepage if you think you might be interesting in such a project. Some of the demos are pretty cool, a port certainly would be quite excellent for showing off, say, GGI or something *grin*.
