Re:What exactly is their business plan?
Codswallop. Chrome supports Greasemonkey scripts natively, and you'll find a vast selection of browser behavior-altering extensions here:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions
http://www.chromeextensions.org/
Basically anything I used to do with Firefox, I do today with Chrome -- and more. And for an added bonus, it doesn't collapse to its knees if I go without a reboot or closing my browser for a few days, let alone having a few dozen windows and tabs open. -
Re:Chrome is a trojan horrse..
The Google Web Store is not the only repository for extensions, you know?
-
Re:So it'll actually be respectable on Facebook?
OK, here it is, Ultimate YouTube Downloader for Chrome.
http://www.chromeextensions.org/utilities/ultimate-youtube-downloader/
It requires a manual install, but that is it. You click on the download button and select from the drop-down which quality/format you want and it automatically puts the video title as the file name, after adjusting for characters that can't be in file names of course, and then saves it to wherever you have the browser setup to download files to.
I don't see how it could be any simpler, other than an option to automatically download one select format/resolution. Hope it works for what you need. -
Re:Firefox lite.
There is an ABP extension for Chrome too.
:)Actually, the question was silly. Why do you "need" Mozilla to survive? As long as they have something that someone wants, then someone will use it. When they have something that no one wants, then they're just entertaining themselves.
But, the question of if Mozilla is going to die is just academic at this point. They only brought in $78.6 million dollars in 2008. Ya, only
... well ...$78,600,000 (Mozilla)
-$ 30,000 (Me)
------------
$78,570,000 .. a whole lot more than I did, and I think I overestimated my income for last year. Damn, it's been a shitty year. But, if Mozilla went away, I'd use a different browser browser. If whoever stops making the OS I like, I'll find another one. If the Internet goes away, I'll find a different job. If the whole world goes away, well, I guess it won't matter much.

Re:Hurray!
Well, if you use Chrome there's an extension that loads IE in a tab. There's a similar plugin for Firefox.
You're still using IE but at least you don't have to launch a new browser.

Re:No AdBlock? No Chrome for me.Every time I decide to try Chrome again, I remember why I don't -- it's all about the ads.
The thing is there is an adblock. It supports the subscriptions that adblock plus original uses too. The problem is that the content still loads - this filter doesn't prevent that, it only blocks it from being displayed. While this solves some of the problem, it also means that you're still adding to page load times, etc just as if the ads were displayed.

Re:adthwart
I'm using this, which appears to be more configurable and takes AdBlock Plus subscriptions (it doesn't appear to be related to AdBlock Plus, just rips off the name).
-
You guys want Adblock? You've got Adblock!
You can find Adblock right here.
Works with SRWare Iron 4.x.
Now, quit complaining that Chrome doesn't have Adblock.

Re:Adblock
You mean this?

Re:Kind of Fitting
Advertisers using flash because it's not as easily blockable
Uh... FlashBlock? Available now for the Chrome as well.

Re:Forget performance
AdSweep: http://adsweep.org/ AdBlock+: http://www.chromeextensions.org/appearance-functioning/adblock/ FlashBlock: http://www.chromeextensions.org/appearance-functioning/flashblock/ I actually have been using AdSweep, but I just discovered that there actually is an AdBlock+ for Chrome. I can't seem to find a link for the NoScript equivalent, but I know it's out there. I used to have it. Just use that other Google product to search for it.

Re:Cheating on my first love - Firefox
Ad blockers exist now, as well as several other extensions. See http://chromeextensions.org/.

Re:Why Chrome never can be my browser:
Firefox doesn't include an ad blocker either. But Firefox has ad blockers available as a plug in. Oh, So does Chrome. http://www.chromeextensions.org/appearance-functioning/adblock/
I agree with you about trusting everything to Google, but your only complaint about Chrome just got shot down in flames. -
Re:Cheating on my first love - Firefox
The lack of extension support is a myth. As is the supposed lack of adblocking extensions.
The chrome extension API specifically includes the exact functionality needed for ad blocking via the filter APIs... and yet here we have conspiracy theorists breaking out their tin foil hats and claiming that Chrome is Google's plot to get rid of ad blockers. *facepalm*
The adblock extension I linked above isn't the only one, although it's the only one that I've tried. It's a bit buggy and the UI isn't all there yet, but it does subscribe to the real ABP's easylist, and it *does* block the ads in the list.
