Symantec: unsafe at any speed...One of the better ways of reducing the functionality and destabilizing a Windows computer is by installing Symantec software on it. The 'Internet Security' suite is a good example, which has cost me several dozens of hours of my life trying to help my parents to get rid of problems caused directly by it. When this did not turn out to be possible I tried to get rid of all Symantec products alltogether. A simple uninstall will not do for that, noooo.... You have to manually scourge the registry from everything related to Symantec and/or download some hacks from their website to clean up the trash their disfunctional install routine leaves behind.
Not to mention the nuisance of Dell installing Norton antivirus on every new computer, which I have to manually remove (to be replaced with ClamWin free antivirus software).
So, Symantec? Just Say No!

I use the opensource Clamwin (http://www.clamwin.org/).

Re:Another backlash to come
You'll want to try out Clamwin, the open source AV program. Very good.

Get Clamwin
Don't bother with Cygwin just for AV. Clamwin is pretty sweet. No real-time scanning, but installation and configuration is fairly straight-forward -- and the database is updated several times a day.
The biggest problem it faces may be that it's so plain and easy to use that people have trouble accepting that it's as good as all the colorful commercial offerings they see. I wonder if Intel's gonna keep AVG's viruses.
Use it as a second scanner if you already have another AV program-- Clamwin is not a resource hog.
Oh yeah -- it's frequently used as an email scanner in networks of all sizes... don't worry about it's virus database! -

Re:Linux solution...
There's also a GUI frontend available for Clam antivirus. However, Clam is not very popular in the various antivirus forums.

There's an open antivirus project:

Several free antivirus programs exist like AVG, Avast, a-squared, and F-Prot.
