Re:Right.
The claim is that it doesn't take any extra data to add forward error correction. That seems doubful, since it would violate Shannon's coding theorem.
Yeah, that would be impossible. But I don't think they meant to claim that there is no extra data. When they say "The combined packet length is no longer than either of the two packets from which it is composed." I took that to mean that each packet is a fixed length. Not that they didn't add extra data to get to that packet length.
This was tested against 3% random packet loss. If you have statistically well behaved packet loss due to noise, FEC works great. If you have bursty packet loss due to congestion, not so great.
Yeah. It might be good for for wireless networks, where even a "5 bar" wireless network connection has a fairly consistent 1% packet loss. The QUIC protocol is another attempt to handle this better by using packet pacing, but QUIC isn't worth it in general even if it addresses this one specific problem.

wherever you go, there you aren't
Those fuckers at www.connectify.me redirected my connection attempt to
http://www.connectify.me/no-javascript/ so that even after I authorized Javascript for their site I was unable to navigate to my intended destination (whatever shit they pulled did not even leave a history item for the originally requested URL).This sucks because I middle-click many URLs into tabs I might not visit until ten minutes later. It I had a bunch of these tabs open I wouldn't even have been able to recollect where I had originally been. In this case, I knew to come back here.
Those fuckers at www.connectify.me need to procure themselves an Internet clue stick PDQ.

Best use I've seen for this
You can gang the Xfinitywifi up with your regular cable connection. See here: http://www.connectify.me/alex-connects-thank-you-comcast/
I don't work for them or anything, but doubling your bandwidth sounds pretty good to me.

Re:Linux Release
Dave from Connectify filling in for Alex here. Here's our Dispatch FAQ: http://www.connectify.me/dispatch-faq/. As you can see, Linux is behind Mac and Mac is a ways off. The benefit of Switchboard is that it can bond channels, so it can help every application you can think of, including those Dispatch can't (video streaming, file uploading, VPNs). We thought fixing all the complaints for Dispatch (supporting more applications AND more platforms) was a winning goal.

Re:I need to check this out
If you want easy-mode, check out Connectify. Timothy (the poster for this article) linked a story about Connectify back in November.
