Garrett Goebel wrote in to let us know that the new NetWinder GS is available for purchase from Corel Computer, even though it is suspiciously absent from their web site. It's apparently a Qube-like device, functionality-wise, and since their is no URL for the story yet, they hopefully won't mind the submitted email pasted below. "

PalmPilot Interface for NetWinder Admin
blalor writes " Zac Sprackett has released a client/daemon package for the NetWinders that allows someone with a PalmPilot with the IR port to do basic administrator and monitoring tasks. Very cool! " -
New NetWinder Versions
colonel writes "Corel Computer has released two new versions of the NetWinder Linux machine, a Group Server and a Rackmounted one aimed at ISPs. The RackMounted NetWinder lacks the multimedia features, but uses UW-SCSI instead of EIDE. Two can fit in 1.75" of 19" rack space. Hopefully, Corel will continue its tradition of donating hardware to the Centre for Creative Learning in Linux so we can see how well they "stack" up. " Heck, why stop there-I'd love to see how well it stacks up in my living room. -

Intel working on new StrongArm designs, after all
In what may prove a significant blow to low cost x86 manufacturers and embedded processor developers such as MIPS, Intel has been working on a ARM 110 and media DSP combination, code named StrongArm 1500. This is also good for Corel Computer's Netwinder. In related news, the price of copper manufacturing is higher than expected. A good round up of the last two weeks events can be read at C'T. -
Corel Netwinder Discounts
K-Man writes "In case anyone hasn't heard, Corel is offering special Comdex discounts on its new Netwinder. For example, a 64M/2.1G DM is going for $709 US, discounted from $889. The offer is over at end-of-day FRIDAY. That's tomorrow, 7/17. Call them to get prices; there's no mention on the website. "

NetBSD Gains USB Support
The NetBSD Project claims to be "first to support USB". They have a keyboard driver, a mouse driver, a printer driver, and more all done! Congrats, guys! USB sounds like something really cool - perhaps the NetWinder folks at CCC should take note! Now, let's get hacking on those Linux drivers! -
Corel Cutting Costs (What about the NetWinder?)
Dirk Eddelbuettel writes "Today's Globe&Mail (Canada's national paper) top business story is about Corel closing two units (WordPerfect in Utah as well Corel Computer Corp.) and slashing 20% of the jobs after the sixth quarterly loss in a row. That could well mean the end of the NetWinder story. " Update I've received email from Oliver Bendzsa who says "As an FYI, Corel Computer is alive and well, NetWinder is alive and well, and Linux is alive and well.". Glad to hear it. -

Corel Announcement on LinuxNet tonight, live.
Puffin writes "Some friends of mine at the EngSoc Project at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada will be in the Corel announcement with a notebook and will be relaying live details as they are announced on LinuxNet IRC (#Corel on irc.cabi.net or linux.mit.edu). It starts at 7pm EDT, 2am GMT. More details are at here. " No matter what the announcement, I'm excited to see Corel joining the growing list of companies that are formally willing to support Open Source. I don't expect an announcement as exciting as Mozilla, but I expect it's going to be cool. Update Everyone should be in #corel intead of #linux on LinuxNET this evening. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there at 7pm. -
Intel to use StrongARM !!!
Intel will be using the StrongARM design for handheld devices, and other low cost appliances. This is the first time Intel has used a non in-house design and architecture: it is a licensee of ARM , which keeps control of the direction of the chip. Hopefully this will boost rather than diminish ARM's chances of survival. StrongARM may now replace i960 as RISC chip for the I2O spec. While being good news for Corel, it may prove problematic for x86 vendors hoping to build x86's for the information appliance market. -
Corel bases NC on Linux and ARM
Wichert Akkerman gave us a great article about Corel introducing a new NC, the Corel Video Network Computer. It's based on 230-300Mgz ARM processor and runis Linux as the operating system. All client software will be java-based.
