Steaming Pile of Sunday Quickies
Finally a chance to break in my cheesy little "Quickies" icon *grin*. First up is Miguel "Mr GNOME" de Icaza who wrote in to point us at Open Resources which looks like a pretty nice site. NiceGuy wrote in to say that Propaganda 6 is out if you happen to be sick of your desktop- some of the finest textures I've seen yet. Rob Biggs wrote in to say that Transmetta has opened up their website. *cough*. Aurik sent us linkage to some geek toys like a plasma fire saber and mass drivers and rail guns Jowey wrote in to say that ReBoot has been bought by the cartoon network and will be re-aired. Now I gotta get a dish. broken sent us a link to the Pig Dance. Is anyone else really sick of these? Brian Fair sent us linkage to a sticker that I guess you could put on your big truck if you have one. Those things amuse me. I've seen them with Ford Logos and stuff, I guess it was only a matter of time. Ah well, thats it for me. I'm gonna wail on some badly tuned power chords, watch Futurama and just take it easy for a bit. -
Car computer crashes, literally.
WeThree writes " A German couple drove their BMW with great confidence under control of its computerized satellite navigation. Indeed, they drove it past a stop sign, down a ferry ramp, and into the Havel River in Caputh, near Potsdam/Berlin, Germany. The computer system reportedly neglected to tell them they needed to wait for the ferry." Looks like it's not quite ready to put in autodrive mode yet. -
AOL vs efnet
WeThree wrote in amongst a flood of other folks sending in a link to the-project.org where you can read discussion threads involving everyone's favorite (?) IRC network and everyone's favorite (?) national ISP (?). Apparently Efnet and AOL are at odds with each other over trouble with AOL users, and AOLs unwillingness (or inability?) to keep control. This may result in efnet delinking the AOL IRC server. -
possible radio signal from outer space
WeThree (Brian) wrote to tell us of a message he received on a newsgroup that an alien signal had been detected. Here is the BBC's report on the discovery. Update! Apparently this discovery has not been confirmed. It might have been a spy satelite... This was the message Brian received. " All those with a radio receiver capable of receiving 1450 Mhz take a listen... something strange is happening... hoax or real? Observatories around the world are buzzing...The BBC claims "intelligent" signal being received from star EQ Pegasi 22 lights years away......
Exact frequency: 1453.07512Mhz plus or minus about +400 hz due to the doppler shift "

Surfin' Cablemodems!
Slashdot reader Robert Gash writes in with this problem:
Hello, I live in a MediaOne area, but I am unable to recieve 2-way cablemodem service (nor will I until 2000). I have been pressed to find information concerning the setup of Linux and the SurfBoard1200/1100 external cablemodems. I do understand some of the basics of the setup and how the modem works (Internal Webpages on the device help you set it up and dial), but I haven't seen any success stories w/ Linux. The mediaone people tell me that it works, but I'd like to know more. I don't want to sink $50/mo and $100 installation fee into a device that won't perform in Linux like I want. I have heard rumors that it is widely discussed in the MediaOne.* newsgroups, but I can't access those because I'm not a MediaOne subscriber. Can anyone provide some more information? Thanks.
Any takers? -
Physicist to Clone Himself
Brian Fair (WeThree) sent us this story where you can read that a Physicist is going to clone himself, and have his wife carry the embryo. I'll avoid posting my personal views on this, but what do you think about this?
