Re:It usually sticks the second or third time arou
We all thought google was a fad, the same way Lycos and Altavista, and even Yahoo were before them. Google was easily the third major contender for the crown of most used search engine. Social networking has had about three leaders so far. There's been friendster, Myspace, and now Facebook. Unless there's a sudden shift in the way Americans behave (because lets face it, we're the only ones that matter), then Facebook is not going away anytime soon. The problem being that old people never change, and they're all finally migrated away from Yahoo groups. And it's not like that was an easy task mind you. Do you have any idea how many granbabies needed to be born, or how many teenagers had to beg their grandparents to get on Facebook for that to happen? Christ, it's almost unfathomable. That said, the market is about as big as it's going to get. At least domestically. So anyway, good luck getting people to change. Especially old people.
Take a look at what salesforce.com and data.com
.data.com are doing with Facebook, and other social sites. This is where it get's interesting, or scary. -
New Y2K problems
There are some more date-related problems set to start in the next few days/years. It's because of the way that days are written using two digits for each field, such as "01/03/01" (this Wednesday, to most Americans). As from 2001, the year can be confused with the day and/or month.
This article from Network Magazine has more info.

Re:VIIDS
I am assuming that you think IDS (intrusion detection systems) are "physical" intrusion detection systems (meaning that they detect someone physically trespassing on the premise) instead of "network" intrusion detection systems (that they detect crackers "trepassing" on the premise's network). So, just to clarify, we are talking about "electronic" intrusions here, okay?
Just to toss out a couple half decent links on intrusion detection systems, for those who are interested:
This is a good link that compares a few commerical network IDSs
This is a shitty test suite for network IDSs
Damn, I thought I had more. Oh well, enjoy! -

Better article on this stuff
Data Communications ran a really good, comprehensive article on this in this month's issue. It talks about the competitors in this market, strengths and weaknesses, and issues like fraud. I think Enron's PR department is just doing a better job than those of folks like arbinet, which is why they get credit for 'proposing' an idea that's already been implemented by at leat seven companies.
FYI, the article at Data.com says you can get a T1 from NY to LA for between $3900 and $4800 through the brokers, compared to three times that from major carriers.
Data Comm...gude sctuff. -
GOTO considered harmful. This isn't news (I recall reading about a similar achievment by BT last year in Data Communications[1]; the scientists had come up with a wall-sized LCD-based display for videoconferencing, a 25 sq. cm. LCD panel for status panels or embedding in T-shirts[2], and a 1 sq. m. sized display with wild-eyed uses such as a stained-glass window replacement). It's still pretty cool though--but the day my 8573-401's plasma display panel is taken from me is the day it's pried from my cold, dead, RSIed fingers.
Cheers,
Joshua.[1] I like that domain name.
