OpenDLP Aims To Stem Data Loss
rollcall writes "A new free and open source tool, OpenDLP, has been released that will help organizations fight data loss caused by stolen laptops, missing HDDs, or compromised systems. OpenDLP is managed from a centralized Web application and it can simultaneously send and control thousands of non-intrusive agents to Microsoft Windows systems over NetBIOS that look for user-defined regular expressions in data at rest. When sensitive data is found, the agents 'phone home' to the Web app with their results. While organizations have continued to lose sensitive data even though many commercial products are available to help prevent this, perhaps the introduction of a free alternative will finally spur organizations to locate their sensitive data proactively before it is lost." -
Data Breach Notices Show Tip of the Iceberg
d2d writes "The Data Loss Database has released a new feature: The Primary Sources Archive, a collection of breach notification letters gathered from various state governments as a result of data breach notification legislation. The documents include breaches that were largely unreported in the media, many of which are significant incidents of data loss. This lends credence to the iceberg theory of data-loss reporting, where many incidents never break the surface. Now, thanks to the Open Security Foundation, we can 'dive' for them." -

Open Security Foundation To Maintain DataLossDB
An anonymous reader points out an announcement up at Attrition.org, that going forward their Data Loss Database will be taken over and maintained by the Open Security Foundation. From the news release: "...OSF is pleased to announce that the DataLossDB (also known as the Data Loss Database — Open Source [DLDOS] currently run by Attrition.org) will be formally maintained as an ongoing project under the OSF umbrella organization as of July 15, 2008... The project's core mission is to track the loss or theft of personally identifying information not just from the United States, but across the world. As of June 4, 2008, DataLossDB contains information on over 1,000 breaches of personal identifying information covering over 330 million records. The... DataLossDB will be free for download and use in non-profit work and research. The new website launch builds off of the current data set and provides an extensive list of new features."
