Ziggy Stardust 30th Anniversary
jonerik writes "Any short list of influential rock albums of the '70s is likely to include David Bowie's 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars,' the story of a futuristic alien rock star and his demise during the Earth's final years. Originally released in June 1972, Ziggy is celebrating his 30th anniversary this year in fine style. First of all, the album is being reissued today in a limited edition 2-CD set. Secondly, the 1983 documentary, 'Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars,' directed by filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker ('Don't Look Back,' 'Monterey Pop') is being re-released this month and John Cameron Mitchell has an interesting interview with Pennebaker about the re-release in this week's Village Voice." -
"Sensation" on David Bowie's Website
ZDNet reports that David Bowie is now hosting the controversial art exhibition "Sensation" on his website. If you've been in a cave for the last week, this is the British exhibition that is annoying the hell out of NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani. He has said he will pull funding to the Brooklyn Museum, and even Sen. Bob Smith (R-NH) is making political hay in Washington. Some may recall the NEA flap started in 1989 by a Mapplethorpe photo exhibit (for a recap, try the book Culture Wars ). The threat of censorship has loomed over publicly-funded galleries and artists ever since. The news behind the news is that the internet will now allow a curious country to see the artwork that our government is telling us is evil; ten years ago, all the newspapers could print were lurid descriptions by the would-be censors. Will this make a difference?

Bowie Distributes New Album Using SDMI Format
Twink writes "David Bowie announces that his new album 'hours...' will be available to download via his website for the two weeks prior to its store release. Interestingly he's using the 'secure' Microsoft Audio 4.0 and Liquid Audio. Both of these systems have been cracked and it pains me to see anyone endorsing SDMI, let alone someone whom I admire. I think, on balance, I'll wait for the insecure Compact Disc version. See the official press release." -
