Robert Brout
In this Belgian journal article (dutch), he mentions he is sorry his colleague Robert Brout can not share and celebrate with him. He died in 2011.

Solution could be worse than the problem/
From the article:
After several disasters caused by algorithmic trading earlier this year, authorities in Hong Kong and Australia drafted proposals to establish regular independent audits of the design, development and modifications of computer systems used in such trades. Why couldn’t auditors do the same to Google?
Silicon Valley wouldn’t have to disclose its proprietary algorithms, only share them with the auditors. A drastic measure? Perhaps. But it’s one that is proportional to the growing clout technology companies have in reshaping not only our economy but also our culture.
Be careful what you ask - if such auditors would be installed, all kind of organisations, churches and "orgs" would try to put their people in it.
BTW, I read the article in Dutch over here.

Re:Bad Precedent
Do forget the priests. This is Italy after all.
Did you see the picture of the court where the scientists were convicted?
There's a cross hanging above the judges.

Re:Shady politician
There are also suspicions that he's guilty of insider trading as his wife and friends sold all their Fortis shares hours before a part of the bank was sold to the Dutch government, although it could not be proved.

Adding it all up, it makes him very shady to say the least.

Re:Public outrage.
It did. The story is about a week old. After it broke SABAM claimed that the library in question does pay about 250 EUR, but it isn't for reading books but for music played in the library. SABAM said that it does collect money for public readings of books but it's only 15 EUR and the book has to be in copyright and be written by one of their member. (Source, in dutch.)
All of this is BS of course these people try to collect on EVERYTHING and as much as possible. They're regularly collecting money for artists that aren't affiliated with them and tend to go after "soft" targets that don't have resources to fight back. They're scum.

They only blocked the subdomain www
I just want to highlight that the website here http://www.demorgen.be/dm/nl/5403/Internet/article/detail/1329177/2011/10/05/Gerecht-blundert-bij-blokkering-The-Pirate-Bay.dhtml (dutch) claims that the ISPs are only ordered to block: - www.thepiratebay.org - www.thepiratebay.net - etc. etc. However, leaving out the www would still work, and trackers (that use tracker.thepiratebay.org) would still be allowed if the ISPs take the order literaly.
