Mostly the answer is "it depends". At that size, you don't buy from the menu, you negotiate. But there is some publicly available information that you can use for ballpark figures. For example, the German science network (DFN, Deutsches Forschungsnetz), which is a cooperative and provides internet access at cost to universities and science institutes in Germany, has this price list for its members. The biggest individual link you can currently get from them is 100Gbps, and that would cost you roughly 50000 EUR per month (the price list has the prices per year), so 25 EUR per 50Mbps (symmetric, dedicated, uncapped). 5EUR/month for 50Mbps with a contention ratio of 1:5 or 10Mbps dedicated.

Just to give you an idea how much 100Gbps is: It's 2% of the traffic at the world's biggest internet exchange, DE-CIX in Frankfurt, Germany, which handles peaks of 5Tbps. 100Gbps is a quarter of the peak traffic at Telehouse's New York internet exchange NYIIX.

Consumers need to understand how little that stuff costs. Here are the (unsubsidized!) prices that German universities pay for internet access: DFN Verein Entgelte. The prices are quite representative of other offerings which give you a backhaul internet connection right to your facility. I only chose this because it's public information. In that list, you can see that it costs about $50000 per month to have two 50Gbps connections to the internet (for a total of 100Gbps) via redundant fiber paths*. That's dedicated bandwidth without any artificial transfer volume limits, and they mean it. If you find 999 friends to share that connection with, you can have your own dedicated 100Mbps line for $50 a month. NO LIMITS, NO THROTTLING, NO CONGESTION: DEDICATED. 30TB a month up and down for $50? Sure, why not. If your name is Bill Gates, why share? How does 30PB/month sound?

Some more data: It's difficult to find public price information, but just to give you some ballpark figures, here's a list of prices for the German Science Network (DFN, Deutsches ForschungsNetz), which is a cooperative, so these are at-cost prices for local access: DFN Verein Entgelte. Direct your attention to categories I06 (1Gbps) and I14 (100Gbps). Category I14 is a hundred times as fast as I06, but it costs less than ten times as much. Also note that those are Euro/year, not month, so that's roughly $50000/month for 100Gbps internet to your doorstep, if you are a science institute or university in Germany, but again, those are at-cost prices, no profit included, but not subsidized either. At this scale, dedicated 50Mbps costs $25/month.

Then it's failed, because the indescribably poor communication commonly called "spam" has all but choked it.

I haven't bothered with Usenet for several years simply because of the quantity of junk. Not to mention the quality :-(

If you use a decently run news server, you almost never have to see a single spam message. I use the public news server at DFN-CIS in Germany (requires free registration) and all I ever see are occasional replies to spam.

While many Usenet newsgroups are junk, most websites are also junk and nobody complains about not bothering with the Web because there are so many junk sites on it. It's nonsense to generalize. There are many active and vibrant groups about specific interests and if one of them matches your interest (which is easy to find out) then Usenet is valuable to you.

You can buy news access from elsewhere, e.g. Supernews or use the free DFN-CIS server.

Also, Usenet anti-spam systems have been developing. It *is* possible to run a spam-free newsserver without losing legitimate articles. Just for an experiment, try getting an account at the free-access news server news.cis.dfn.de, a fantastic service offered to you courtesy of the German taxpayer. This is my daily-use server and in most groups I find *no* spam ever - none. Even in alt.sexual.abuse.recovery only the very occasional one slips through.

I'd encourage anyone not to give up on Usenet just yet; it still has a lot of good stuff, and the spirit of freedom survives to this day. With a decent newsreader and a decent newsserver, it beats any web forum including /.

1. Teranews.com - 50mb/day for free but you have to enter a credit card number (they hope people will upgrade their accounts plus probably cuts down on abuse). They don't bill your credit card number nor automatically push you up into the next paying category so you don't have anything to worry about. Right now, universities are trying to stop the filesharing by crippling the network in a way that degrades students' machines to clients. They put students into a consumer role which I think is the direct opposite of educating them.

The first step is slowing or blocking known filesharing ports and protocols. Users will find a way around this (they'll download the next generation of filesharing tools). So then inbound connections will be blocked. That removes all peer to peer capability, at least for connection based protocols.

Encrypted channels below the TCP level remove the ability to filter based on content or protocols, because attributes like port numbers and protocol headers are hidden inside the encrypted stream. In the long run, if you want to have separate limitations for filesharing and other traffic, you will have to disallow encryption, or at least stop inbound connections, which, depending on the tunnel protocol, can be impossible without completely blocking that protocol.

When the point is reached that filesharing is "impossible", the network will be web only. The bad thing about that is the message: The internet is the web, the web is what bigger entities serve and you consume. (All peer to peer had to be removed to stop filesharing, but that's known only to historians.)

Is there a better way? I think so. Don't cripple the network technologically, but involve students in the economics of the net.

Category 15 is a 622 MBit connection with a volume cap of 50000 GB/month. The price per year is 741373 Euro. That is down to 1.24 Euro (about 1,10 US-$) a GB.

At that price, most students would be happy to pay for the used bandwith, if that meant no more "you can't do this, you can't do that". Offer 1 or 2 GB per week free, charge for anything exceeding that and offer some means by which the user can monitor and limit his/her bandwith usage and everyone but the most hardcore filesharers will be happy.
