Re:But there is some privacy at least in Maryland
On this topic, when I was an undergraduate at the University of Maryland, an student employee working for the security department was fired for zooming a surveillance camera on a dormitory window. The story was that he was trying to watch a game on the TV inside the room. The school then installed software to blur windows to the camera operators, though I'm not sure how well that software works...

Re:a proposal
For my thoughts about what the universities are not doing and should be doing you might want to see my comments in this interview by the University of Maryland student newspaper: http://www.diamondbackonline.com/media/storage/pa

Re:Comments on the PDF
Science education definitely not going downhill. Here at the university of Maryland everybody learns the latest findings of the science of feng shui. It has numbers and elements just like all the other sciences. Fire, earth, water, metal, and wood are so much easier to remember than all those funny abbreviations.

In addition, we don't really understand the effect on wind patterns caused by the farms on the surrounding ecology and weather patterns. I wonder if the tidal generation has similar problems? Imagine the effect to Europe if the Gulf Stream was disturbed by a series of wave turbines? (Ok, a somewhat far-fetched question there.)

M$ student Tax at Univ of Maryland
Given that they have run this story, I doubt that
/. will run a story that I submitted at about the same time. The University of Maryland at Diamondback is going to try and tax every student to have access to M$ products and updates. Read about it here This is an effort to make sure that there is compliance with M$ liscensing. No matter if you don't even have a computer, you are presumed guilty of infringement and must pay up. Linux or not, you gotta send money to unka Bill... Somehow I think that this is beyond the pale...
