SETI at home
Yaron Minsky wrote in to remind us about The Seti Project and to give everyone this link where you can read about the Distributed SETI project. I haven't mentioned this in several months, so the executive summary is that a distributed network of computers run screen savers that process noise sampled from space, and search for signs of extraterrestrials(sp?) Its like Distributed.net for Carl Sagen fans. -
Slashdot RC5 Cracking Effort
We've been consistently scoring in the top 10 overall teams over at distributed.net. Despite the fact that yesterday the Amiga team beat us, we're doing great. But we need more! Throw a client on anything that has a clock rate and set that team to Slashdot *grin*. New clients have been released in the last few weeks with various optimized cores that will crack keys faster. Get to it! -
Slashdot and RC5
Now that Des2 has fallen, Distributed.net has gone back to working on RC5/64. Slashdot's team has now shifted over from Des2 as well- we ranked 9th yesterday, and 49th overall (rising quickly though!) Thanks to the hundreds of readers that are still helping crack the code. Keep up the great work, and keep looking for new machines to run clients on! -
New DES Clients
phi1abole wrote in to let us know that a new batch of Des Clients are available for download. This gives me a good chance to once again plug Slashdot's DES2 Team. We're ranked #8 overall. With over 2/3rds of the keyspace searched, this contest is almost toast. -
DES II Effort
I am happy to report that as a team, Slashdot has now moved into the top ten. All of you out there who haven't joined yet, the time is now! The revolution is imminent..rather...how about you join up with this? For those of you wondering how to join the team, some kindly people have included instructions. Many thanks to Erik Berry for his detailed instructions, and remember, when DES II is cracked (should be soon), all the clients will automatically switch back to RC5, so hopefully we can start cranking through there as well. -
Des2, Bovine and Slashdot
Distributed.net has been working hard to crack the Des2 contest inside the 22 day limit, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen, despite Team Slashdot's rising in the ranks to #13. Thanks to the 125-150 of you who have been contributing keys in our name!Anyway the prize halves pretty quick, but we're already 30% of the way through the keyspace (and moving along at a steady clip now) so why doesn't everyone Go over to Des and snag a client (and join Slashdot's team!) so that we can wrap this contest up soon and get back to RC5/64

Bovine Keeps Going
With only 9 days left until the jackpot drops in half, Bovine has a long ways to go, but they are gaining speed. If you haven't already, run out there, grab a client, and join the fun. And join Slashdot's team! Our 75 members have propelled us up to 19th place. And by joining our team they instantly became more attractive to members of the opposite sex, and earned 58 Karma Points (redeemable at participating Fast Food Restaraunts). -
Slashdot's Des2 Efforts
Here at Slashdot, we are obviously big supporters for the whole concept of the technological age. And one of the coolest things going on right now is the work being done at Distributed.netFollow the link below to read more about it, and our effort towards helping break it.
Why do we want to do this? As various encryption methods are proved to be reasonably crackable, we have stronger ammunition against the government's desires to restrict encryption. If a bunch of computers scattered around the net with some spare time can crack a packet, certainly a focused effort by someone with money could do it much faster.
As of the 19th of January, team Slashdot was ranked 25th overall, with a sustained rate of close to 16,000 kkeys/sec. We're not doing this to get a high ranking, but a little publicity for our little site is a nice side effect. To say thanks, those of us in the management over here would like to recognize the members of the team:

1-22-98: Slight update: we now have over 35 people churning away for us, and we continue to move up the rankings, where we are at 19. Let's keep it up- and catch up to Slovak Team.
So, we encourage all of you to go and grab your personal client, and hook your claws into the DES II challenge. This challenge is on a time limit , so get right. And, of course, if team Slashdot happens to win, any money won as part of the effort will be put in to new hardware for Slashdot. So, do your part, and join Team Slashdot.
To join, simply setup your client, make sure that it is running, and then go to distributed, and add yourself on to the team. Quick, easy and painless. Just like getting the news from Slashdot.

Bovine DES2 Underway
The stats are now up and running. Run out to Distributed.net to grab a client, and if you feel generous, join the Slashdot.org team- we're team number 1365 and we'd love to move up in the rankings. So if you appreciate Slashdot, join our team to say thanks. We have several members already chugging away. -
Bovine vs. DES
Bovine is moving over and taking on the new DES encryption contest. They ought to be able to crack it fairly quickly if the huge base of installed users currently working on 64 RC5 upgrade their clients. Read more over at their homepage. Thanks to Super Sharp Shooter for sending this our way.
