PHP 4.3.8 Released, Fixing Remote Security Hole
christian klink writes "While it was already reported on Slashdot, that PHP5 was released, it was not mentioned that the PHP developers have also announced the release of PHP 4.3.8 which is supposed to fix a major remote security hole in nearly all PHP installations. Additionally this new version adds a workaround for another Internet Explorer bug. The bugs were found by security specialist Stefan Esser of e-matters who is also a member of the PHP developers." -

Simon Doring writes "Stefan Esser did it again. Yesterday he reported 13 remote root vulnerabilities in Ethereal. Time to teach all those sniffing kiddies an unhealthy lesson. The next LAN party will be a lot of fun." -
Remote Root Exploit in CVS
RenHoek writes "Security expert Stefan Esser from E-matters discovered a bug in CVS version 1.11.4 and lower, that can give malignant users remote root access. The exploit was confirmed on BSD, but other OS's like Linux, Solaris and Windows are vulnerable too. A security advisory can be found here and there is also a patch available. CVS version 1.11.5 which is fixed can be downloaded as well." -

Remote hole, DoS in MySQL
Wee writes "I just saw two pretty nasty vulnerabilities in MySQL were announced today by a German company called e-matters. From the annoucenment: "We have discovered two flaws within the MySQL server that can be used by any MySQL user to crash the server. Furthermore one of the flaws can be used to bypass the MySQL password check or to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running mysqld. We have also discovered an arbitrary size heap overflow within the mysql client library and another vulnerability that allows to write '\0' to any memory address. Both flaws could allow DOS attacks against or arbitrary code execution within anything linked against libmysqlclient." Version 3.23.54 fixes the issues in 3.x. I couldn't find a patched version for the 4.0 beta." -
