Re:Enternet 300?No, Enternet 300 came from Efficient Networks, and Siemens now owns and supports the Enternet 300 product line.
If anybody cares, there's still a Enternet 300 support site.

Re:Your utility - telnet
The only other IP scheme I know that the Speedstreams have is the 10.x.x.x scheme that was mentioned elsewhere in this discussion. You probably already know this, but Efficient's website has some great documentation on all of their products.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like they have much on the 5250/5251 series (which appears to only be able to support a VCI/VPI of 0/38 which won't work with a lot of telcos anyway). You may really want to look into the 5851 router - it's powerful, and you wouldn't have to try to "hack" it.

Firewall MUST BE IN Alcatel 1000 or else. What good is a home-user and a firewall if the Alcatel 1000 is STILL directly and brokeningly accessible from world-wide Internet full of hackers?
Not unless there is some special firewall router box has TWO DSL ports in which one can drop between the CO and the crappy Alcatel 1000, you're better off replacing the whole thing.
It's not Efficient, if it isn't from Efficient. Excuse me for the sappy plugin, but as a security specialist, this is one of the better ones.
Must be those French mentality mindset. Moron n'importe qui?.

Lookout Sympatico / SpeedStream modem users!
If you have a speedstream 5260 it looks like the innards are from Alcatel. More info here.
That's the model Sympatico just gave me last week.
Fuck.

Can't we all just get along?
I hate all this infighting among distros. Everyone who knows linux know that most distros have at least one or two redeeming qualities, even though RedHat might be one of the least. I personally use mandrake mostly, or the VALinux modded redhat, as I want the bleeding edge of everything, even if it means a crash every couple of weeks. I actually use BeOS mostly though, and I am forced into Windows until I can ditch my shitty Efficient USB DSL modem.
But for god's sake, stop with the distro war posts. -
Re:Bad idea
WinDSL is already here. Just look at the Efficient Networks 3060 and 4060 modems that most ISPs have started installing. They MUST download firmware before they operate. Many users report they their computer is much slower after installation too. Yep, the WinDSLModem is already here......
