The Most Important Obscure Languages?
Nerval's Lobster writes: If you're a programmer, you're knowledgeable about "big" languages such as Java and C++. But what about those little-known languages you only hear about occasionally? Which ones have an impact on the world that belies their obscurity? Erlang (used in high-performance, parallel systems) springs immediately to mind, as does R, which is relied upon my mathematicians and analysts to crunch all sorts of data. But surely there are a handful of others, used only by a subset of people, that nonetheless inform large and important platforms that lots of people rely upon... without realizing what they owe to a language that few have ever heard of. -
Erlang and OpenFlow Together At Last
New submitter SIGSTOP writes "The LINC [OpenFlow 1.2 software-based] switch has now been released as commercial friendly open source through the FlowForwarding.org community website, encouraging users and vendors to use LINC and contribute to its development. The initial LINC implementation focuses on correctness and feature compliance. Through an abstraction layer, specialized network hardware drivers can be easily interfaced to LINC. It has been implemented in Erlang, the concurrent soft-real time programming language invented by Ericsson to develop their next generation networks." -
Announcing Ozma: Extending Scala With Oz Concurrency
setori88 writes "Programming for concurrency makes sense in developing for both large scales (cloud computing) and small (multicore CPUs). Some languages were designed for concurrency and distribution; One of those languages is Oz, which provides advanced primitives regarding concurrency and distribution. Oz is mostly declarative, a paradigm that encompasses functional and logic programming. Despite its innovative features and expressiveness, Oz never made it into the wide developer community; one reason is its unusual syntax." Read on to learn about an effort to bring Oz's concurrency features to more programmers. setori88 continues: "But first, some background: Martin Odersky, in designing the Scala programming language, recognized the need for community acceptance of the kind that Oz lacked. He designed Scala as being both close to Java (in terms of syntax and concepts) and interoperable with existing Java libraries. Today, Scala seems to be the best hope for making functional programming accessible to programmers.
Although Scala has no language feature related to concurrency, the advanced library Akka, inspired by Erlang, provides Scala programmers with concurrent and distributed concepts.
Now comes a project attempting to popularize the concurrency concepts of Oz, called Ozma. Ozma implements the full Scala specification and runs on the Mozart VM. It extends Scala with dataflow variables, declarative concurrency, lazy declarative concurrency, and message-passing concurrency based on ports. Ozma extends the duality of Scala, namely the combination of functional and object styles, to concurrent programming." -
Is XMPP the 'Next Big Thing'
Open Standard Lover writes "XMPP (eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) has been getting a lot of attention during the last month and it seems that the protocol is finally taking off as a general purpose glue to build distributed web applications. It has been covered that AOL was experimenting with an XMPP gateway for its instant messaging platform. XMPP has been designed since the beginning as an open technology for generalized XML routing. However, the idea of an XMPP application server is taking shape and getting supporters. A recent example shows that ejabberd XMPP server can be used to develop a distributed Twitter-like system." -
An Overview of Parallelism
Mortimer.CA writes with a recently released report from Berkeley entitled "The Landscape of Parallel Computing Research: A View from Berkeley: "Generally they conclude that the 'evolutionary approach to parallel hardware and software may work from 2- or 8-processor systems, but is likely to face diminishing returns as 16 and 32 processor systems are realized, just as returns fell with greater instruction-level parallelism.' This assumes things stay 'evolutionary' and that programming stays more or less how it has done in previous years (though languages like Erlang can probably help to change this)." Read on for Mortimer.CA's summary from the paper of some "conventional wisdoms" and their replacements.
Old and new conventional wisdoms:- Old CW: Power is free, but transistors are expensive.
- New CW is the "Power wall": Power is expensive, but transistors are "free." That is, we can put more transistors on a chip than we have the power to turn on.
- Old CW: Monolithic uniprocessors in silicon are reliable internally, with errors occurring only at the pins.
- New CW: As chips drop below 65-nm feature sizes, they will have high soft and hard error rates.
- Old CW: Multiply is slow, but load and store is fast.
- New CW is the "Memory wall" [Wulf and McKee 1995]: Load and store is slow, but multiply is fast.
- Old CW: Don't bother parallelizing your application, as you can just wait a little while and run it on a much faster sequential computer.
- New CW: It will be a very long wait for a faster sequential computer (see above).

ICFP 2003 Programming Contest Starts June 28th
mvw writes "The web pages for the ICFP 2003 programming contest are online! It starts Saturday, 28th June 0:00 GMT. As the time zone hints, this year it is organized in Sweden." From the rules page: "All programmers are invited to enter the contest, either individually or in teams. The contest offers direct, head-to-head comparison of language technology and programming skill. We have a range of prizes for the winners: cash awards, books, invitations to the conference for students, and, of course, unlimited bragging rights. The prizes will be awarded at ICFP 2003 in Uppsala this August." -

ICFP 2001 Contest Results
Phil Bewig writes: "Results of the 2001 ICFP Programming Contest (previously mentioned at SlashDot here and here) have been announced. First place is to a program in Haskell, second place is to a program in Dylan, and the judges' prize is to a program in Erlang. The judges also named third place (ocaml) and fourth place (C) entries that were not awarded prizes. ICFP Programming Contest pages for prior years are available: 2000, 1999, and 1998." -
Erlang becomes Open Source
Michael Lundkvist writes "Ericssons Erlang programming language and run time environment has finally become Open Source! This includes such goodies as Mnesia the distributed Database Management System. It is released under EPL which is a derivative of MPL. Slashdot has previously covered Eddie which is implemented in Erlang" Apparently, there is some sort of legal protection the company gains from doing this, but IANAL.
