Court rejects SONY's restraining order against Connectix
Gon writes "According to this Techweb story, the emulation side has legal precedent on their side. This might explain why the SF court rejected SONY's request for a restraining order against Connectix." Kristian Dorland sent us this email from the authors of UltraHLE who claim they have not been contacted by Nintendo and that they know nothing about the security device Nintendo claims they circumvented in the N64." Interesting Ultra HLE Tech doc posted by an AC below. -
IBM Paints Linux Blue
Phobius sent us a link to an article where you can read about IBMs dealings with Red Hat which might land Big Blue in a position of supporting Linux 24/7. -
Marc Andreesen's Future at Netscape
Adam Radulovic wrote in to send us a link to a story where Marc Andreesen is interviewed about his role within the new AOL/Netscape combo. It says he's not leaving but that his role is still somewhat murky. -
The Internet and Music Industry
tj jones writes " This article claims that the big music industry will be the losers and that independent labels and unknown musicans will be the winners. It also says that what is needed is a more secure way of storing music other than mp3. Expect to see a secure format from microsoft(ack) that will handle all types of media. Five bucks says it won't be an open format. " -
Microsoft considered buying AMD and Cyrix
In yet another amazing disclosure, the DOJ case has brought to light that Microsoft considered buying AMD or Cyrix back in December 1997 at a time when computer manufacturers were complaining that Microsoft's OS costs were too high. The memo also states that Microsoft has been increasing the price of their software while hardware prices continued to tumble. Interestingly buying the rival chipmakers was based on fears that Intel was about to enter the OS business. This memo is the same as the memo which suggested an annual OS fee. Thanks to Crypt242 for the link. -
IBM To Build Largest Academic Research Computer
Kaos writes "IBM said it had been selected by the National Partnership for Advanced Computational infrastructure (NPACI), a leading U.S. academic computer consortium, to supply the first supercomputer capable of handling a trillion calculations per second." Sounds just the sort of thing we need to run Slashdot ! ;-) Update: Oops. Subject line got truncated. -
Comedy Central Losens Copyright grip on South Park
DaBuzz writes " Comedy Central is conceding that it cannot control the amount of bootleg South Park stuff on the web, so they will try to offer more of it branding it with their name and copyright. Only problem I see is that it's a proprietary format and the stuff has to be licensed from Comedy Central. " All things considered, CC is a cool channel. Who else offers whole episodes of their shows online? If only my cable service wasn't crappy I might get to watch their show (MediaOne? You listening? Give me Comedy Central in Holland, MI! Do I have to move to the other side of town just for one channel?) -

iMac in the news
Martin-Gilles Lavoie writes "For all those pundits who keep arguing the lack of floppy in the iMac (while ignoring the fact that USB floppies are available), a German magazine (c't) has a cool tip on hooking up a regular floppy drive directly on the iMac motherboard Check it out. OpenSource/architechture winers can therefore grab a soldering iron and do it themselves! " In other news, Micah writes "Apparently, 15% of iMac buyers are purchasing their first computer, and 13% are replacing PC systems if this article is correct." -

Our First Time Hoax
Alex Prestin writes "For those that don't know, www.ourfirsttime.com was supposed to be a site where you could pay $5 to watch two virgins have sex for the first time. THe mainstream press absolutely ate this up, like they did with the online birth thing, and online weddings, etc. Well, turns out, it was just a humougous scam. Maybe this will stop these stupid internet stories by mainstream TV news." What I want to know though, it who beat us to registering www.ourlasttime.com. -
Intel Cuts P2 Price
Intel has cut prices on the Pentium II 333Mhz. The chip is now US583, instead of $722. Intel also stated they will be cutting prices more frequently (as opposed to about once per quarter). I hope Digital can keep their prices competitive... -
Microsoft Demands Recall
Wielding perhaps the largest stick of them all, Microsoft has demanded that an IDG publication "PC Welt", published in Germany, recall its March issue. Microsoft claims the magazine "incites its readers to commit software piracy". I'm no expert on German laws, but I wonder what sort of image Microsoft has overseas, and their chances of winning the lawsuit they are filing... -
SGI to sell NT boxen
A story on OS News pointed to this story that talks about SGI's planned line of NT based PC workstations. Personally, this breaks my heart. I had always though of SGI as a Unix champion (jokes about Irix aside) and it hurts to see them pushing NT. Is this the begining of the end for SGI or a great new strategy?
