Re:Download while you still can
Actually, there is another VERY IMPORTANT resource out there for sharing. (And I hope this gets modded up to a 5, as its critical that information such as this spreads). The client is known as FileTopia. I never investigated precisely how it works, but it is designed with privacy and security at the forefront. When I was overseas studying for a year, the school I was at had fucking bitch-ass tight (yes, the proper adjective in this situation is "fucking bitch-ass tight") regulations and restrictions on their network. You couldn't even get instant messengers to work, let alone torrent clients or standard P2P stuff such as WinMX. Lo and behold, I stumbled upon FileTopia. It worked like a charm. Something about appearing as a secure html page or what not!?! (If anyone has more insight into it, please reply!) But, regardless of how it works, it works. Last time I checked, it only had about 5,000 users. But the amount of sharing was significant. Also, it felt like a more personalized community, with much more monitoring and reciprocity. I'm back on torrents for now, but I have a feeling that Filetopia like clients may be the direction we are heading in the next 5-10 years. http://www.filetopia.com/ NB: It felt great to find a way to screw over the uni too. I was about ready to try to slave an offsite computer and set up a proxy. But this worked just fine.

Re:Is this needed?
[flamebait] Why do we need software to teach our children? Wouldn't teaching them in person be better, or are we all too busy? we need software to teach our children because the rest of us are all to busy downloading pr0n, and trying to get the latest version of windows to boot. [/flamebait] freenet is great anominity and security, i dont like the idea of unused data disapearing completly, but it should be less replicated... oh and by the way if encryption is what your looking for filetopia is a great p2p progie that lets you share data over encrypted channels, and it's flagship feature is CHAT, kinda like napster. but freenet promises to be so much more, i am just waiting for content to grow more, beyone pr0n and skript kiddies virii. my 2cents.

Encrypted P2P ...
Has been around for a while now. Ceck out filetopia. Although Locutus does look useful for searching corporate lans and such.

Re:Adelphia Sucks...With most cable providers you are renting the modem for x amount per month and that I assume is what they are charging for...?
By the way, anyone here tried out Direct Connect?
http://www.neo-modus.com/ for you paranoids
Some of the servers will not allow you to connect without more than 3,6 even 9 gigs to share and x amount of slots open. What will the RIAA do when they send in their bulldogs and the automatic script kicks them for not sharing or not sharing the right kind of files ?
Or what about Filetopia with its server hosted in spain and promising "...security and privacy that provides...strong ciphers and public key techniques for all communications and sophisticated techniques to protect your IP and...make you truly anonymous and safe from attacks..."

Re:Freenet
If your looking for a file-sharing client that uses encryption, easy UI, and bouncer servers, then you should probably look at filetopia.

Re:SSL based P2P file sharing apps? There are P2P networks with encryption. For small networks: Groove.net, Paranoia. For large-scale sharing: Filetopia.

Re:Napster alternatives - FiletopiaI've always thought Filetopia would be a good contender to replace Napster/Scour. Added benefits are that it offers encription and privacy. They are apparently located in Spain where the copyright laws are much looser than here. Also your IP address isn't visible like in other alternatives.
You can view their feelings regarding on-line privacy here.

Re:How does this overcome the fundamental problem?Take a look at filetopia, and look at how they combine file collection management, friends lists, and IRC. Though the userbase is still small, it seems to work well.
Looking for pr0n? Go to the xxx channel, download file lists from people, click on the tab that lists only those files that are missing from your master file list, then add files to hotlist/ignorelist/download list. It all works very nicely.

Re:Gah, IRC protocol bad...All I can say is take a look at the very cool filetopia. It combines a collection manager (including a diff like feature), BBS system (messages that are held on the server), IRC, and a few other P2P ideas.
Note, it is closed source for the moment, but you just have to love their philosophy (read their philosophy page, duh!). Oh yeah, and it encrypts most traffic with strong crypto.

Let me use this opportunity .... for some blatant self-promotion.
infoAnarchy reports on the many, many alternatives to Scour & Napster, be it distributed or centralized. It uses the K5 site engine, meaning anyone can submit stories and moderate submissions.
In our Resources section, you can get an overview of the many available file sharing tools. Here's the ones I would recommend:
- One of the best alternative feature-wise is Filetopia (its userbase is relatively small).
- And for MP3s, Songspy is quite powerful.
- If you like Napster, get Napigator. It allows you to connect to OpenNap servers where any file type can be shared (and which are not concerned by any changes in Napster's business model).
- A good alternative to the Windows Napster client is FileNavigator.
- Recently reborn: CuteMX, has a lot of features but requires IE.
- Somewhat closer to Gnutella, with distributed servers: DirectConnect
- Distributed, anonymous, encrypted: Blocks
But again, please come visit us at iA to find out about the best new tools. We know our stuff.
File sharing will never die.

Yawn ...
Honestly people
... Why all the fuss ? Encrypted file sharing is already here Filetopia Why bother using insecure systems like Napster, Cutemx etc. etc. ? -
Re:Public key encrypted distributed file sharing .I want to know more about Filetopia. I went to the website but really couldn't find the information I was looking for. Sure, they encrypt stuff, but can my traffic still be analyzed? That is, will I connect peer-to-peer and display my IP to people from whom I download? And what I wanted?
I'm also trying out Freenet, which at the moment is very much incomplete - but we all know that. I had to try 5 keys before I finally could retrieve something, and that something was porn
.. *sigh* I must also voice the doubt that Freenet won't be Freenet, since they readily admit that you will give your IP away to the first node you connect to. It _will_ be possible (but hard) to track people down even on Freenet.Gnutella
... there's just something about it that I don't like. Dunno what it is, but I got the feeling after reading their webpage.Napster. Like it. Too bad the recording industry actually lost a few quids there. I had plans buying an album I've seen the commercial before, but after downloading it with Napster and listening to it, I decided not to.
It sucked.

Public key encrypted distributed file sharing ...
Check out this kick ass app www.filetopia.com. It has napster like functionality, but with many more usefull features. There is no global search yet (4 weeks). It uses strong public key encryption for file transfers and chat(!). Guess where people are going to go when the unencryted systems napster, cutemx, imesh, gnutella etc. are shut down ? Now no one can evesdrop on your searches and transfers
:) Sweet ...
