Re:so?
If something were really, really bad for you, the evidence would be overwhelming.
I'm sure your grandfather's doctor said the same thing to him in the 1950s about cigarette smoking. "Bad for you? Nonsense, we'd have overwhelming evidence by now. Have a Camel, they're good for you!"

Geothermal Energy Is Viable for DOOM
I have a background in this reality and would advise anyone reading the source of this thread to take a moment and look up the following 'word set' on any search engine:
Geothermal Injection Induced Earthquake
Due to increased seismic activity generated by injection (studies done in Colorado) Hawaii turned down geothermal power.
Here are a few links to get one started:

A number of years ago I provided information about a technology that only a hand-full of people are involved with and was called a troll by one of your moderators.
I am IEEE published in the area I mentioned in that post, your moderator obviously could not access, or did not take the time to access these records, and went into name calling.
I have waited for years for the following to show up on the Internet and somebody finally posted it. I believe all moderators should be required to read it (from 1981):

Terminus As A.I.
The Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov
The premise of the series is that mathematician Hari Seldon has spent his life developing a branch of mathematics known as psychohistory.
It uses the law of mass action to predict the future on a large scale, such as of planets or empires.
Using these techniques, Seldon foresees the fall of the Galactic Empire, which encompasses the entire Milky Way. He also predicts that there will be a thirty-thousand-year dark age before the next great empire rises.
To prevent this, he decides to create a small secluded haven of technology in a corner of the galaxy (on the planet Terminus) called the Foundation, whose job it will be to preserve knowledge after the collapse, thus reducing the time required for the next Empire to rebuild. If done properly, it will take only a thousand years before the next empire rises.

Questions Safe = Follow People Not Money
Ever since amateur radio operators started using 70cm (440 MHz) there has been an ongoing conversation on 'fried brain or not'.
Understanding the workings of this digital octopus starts with Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association who hired former Rep. Steve Largent (R) of Oklahoma as its president during 2003.
We've all heard the phrase "follow the money" if one wants to learn something, but in this case, we'll follow the Politician.
Steve Largent
1996 - Bob Barr (R-GA) and Steve Largent (R-OK) introduce Anti-Gay / Lesbian H.R. 3396, "Defense of Marriage Act,"
1998 - Congress Drops Anti-Gay/Lesbian "Largent Amendment", sponsored by Oklahoma Republican Steve Largent
1999 - Both the honorable Steve Largent (R. OK), and James Inhofe (R. OK), refuse to answer questions in relation to US military activities within the southern Mexican State of Chiapas. According to a representative of the local district office of Rep. Steve Largent, Mr Joe Adams, had stated in a hand written response, that the information you had requested in relation to subject is classified, and cannot be answered by our office.-see letter to Shawn Garner. Questions sent to Steve Largent, and James Inhofe:
1. who are the drug cartels within the southern Mexican state of Chiapas?
2. How many tons of cocaine and heroin have been confiscated and destroyed within the southern Mexican state of Chiapas?
3. Who are the US backed paramilitaries within the southern Mexican state of Chiapas?
4. How much funding do they get from the federal government?
5. How many members of the SOA are present within the nation of Mexico?
6. How many combat troops are on the ground within the southern Mexican state of chiapas, and the nation of Mexico?
2003 - Republicans take over K Street By Gail Russell Chaddock | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor "Most of the recent new hires in the lobby shops along the K Street corridor, and especially the top ones, have been Republicans, many from the Bush administration and Capitol Hill. Last week, the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association hired former Rep. Steve Largent (R) of Oklahoma as its next president.
Getting the Picture?...Someone who hates individual sexual preference, Gays, Lesbians, and reminiscent of Brown Shirts is now the president of an organization that is going to tell you if cellular telephones are safe.

Re:Something is fishy Ummm Nothing New Here
Anybody remember the AMBER Act... which was (imo) a good 'thing'?
Did you know Senator Joe Biden (D-Del.) snuck, the RAVE Act into the AMBER Act (See H.R. 834 Source: http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi ?dbname=108_cong_bills&docid=f:h834ih.txt.pdf (Note: this is a PDF file)).
Do you even know what the RAVE Act was? Here's a snip:
Section 305 of the CLEAN-UP Act stipulates that:
`Whoever, for a commercial purpose, knowingly promotes any rave, dance, music, or other entertainment event, that takes place under circumstances where the promoter knows or reasonably ought to know that a controlled substance will be used or distributed in violation of Federal law or the law of the place where the event is held, shall be fined under title 18, United States Code, or imprisoned for not more than 9 years, or both.'
Under the provision, any concert promoter, nightclub owner and arena or stadium owner could be fined and jailed, since a reasonable person would know some people use drugs at musical events."
The thing about this Act is, "Taken literally, the law is so broad that letting people smoke marijuana at a private house party could be a federal felony." Source: http://inthesetimes.com/comments.php?id=322_0_2_0_ C
Salon.com's take was, "Your glow stick could land you in jail" By Janelle Brown
.
Event Promoters could get up to 20 years in jail and a $250,000 fine if participants do drugs.

Having been one of 'those' who implemented usenet and having invested many hours into trying to understand, I offer this for consideration.
If there was a plan that was created about the time of MacAurther, "THEY" did not count on the existence of the Internet. Source: http://www.flyingsnail.com/Dahbud/theplan.html
Use your imagination and picture how things might be if there were no Internet....
Then figure out what "THEY" will attempt to control next...that will probably be attached to another major bill....and not the one that comes in your mailbox every month.

The Missing BBS Files
Recently, xlr8yourmac, had a piece on a 1980s BBS called the CommuniTree which had some interesting views moderators might enjoy (under "Fairwitness").
For those seeking to spend less than '7 hours' looking back at the BBS, I would suggest the main page from the above listing:
Hackers - The Missing BBS Files
It partially covers, TAP, MIT-ITS, PCNet-ABBS (run by John Gilmore), 8BBS, DFM-BBS (run by Jordan Hubbard), and the CommuniTree (run by the late Dean Gengle)...and these were some of the first, lesser known Bulletin Board Systems.
As someone else said, 'they [the bbs] were about the people.

Network Rendering Program - Free Source
Here is the location of some source code for establishing a network renderer:
reppu-0.1pre1.tar.gz - [size 12556 bytes]
Here is the page that goes with it:
Network Rendering Program
Although it was originally written for use with Blender, I know, for a fact, it has been modified to use with other 3D packages, with some tweaks in the code.
I run a render farm, but don't want to get into it because of how things are moderated here; however, it consists of SGI, Mac, Dec Alpha, and Linux boxen and works well.
I use most 3D packages with the exception of SI...due to cost... and have run a modified REPPU with all of them.
REPPU was originally written by Upi Tamminen. -

Re:the real value of SETI == "noble goal"
Just to add:
Since the masses seem to thrive on source, here are the locations of a March 1981 (brief) background on CETI and STARQUEST; which came before SETI, and give 'one' reason of 'why search' (they are jpg images of bbs text pages):
CETI-STARQUEST-1
STARQUEST-2
STARQUEST-3
After STARQUEST finished SETI started. (fwiw) Kent Cullers (SETI) participated on Marshall's net and was an active 'Bay Area" amateur radio operator. -

Re:Blender (There a GUI Addicts Anonymous for this
I spent 25 years 'working up' to be an animator. When I finally got all the hardware I needed, I was out of money and the commercial animation packages were beyond my reach.
Then a miracle happened, I read about Blender (a FREE struct visualizer) on Slashdot and (smile) my life was changed forever! (p.s. tnx /. ~@~)
Here are a few links to check out:
