Most Popular Free, Arena-Style FPS?
anomalous cohort writes "I am a casual gamer. Go or Chess are my games of choice when I am up for a serious intellectual gaming challenge. Otherwise, I just want to blow off some steam in a free, arena-style FPS such as Alien Arena, Nexuiz, Sauerbraten, or Tremulous at the end of a long day. Either way, it is very rare for my gaming experience to exceed 30 minutes. The problem is that attendance for these games has dropped off over the years. Finding a game with about two humans and two robots is perfect for me and very rare these days. My question is this: What is currently the most popular free, arena-style FPS for the casual gamer that you know of?" That reminds me, how is the Quake Live beta coming along? -
Chess - 2070 CPUs vs 1 GM
jvarsoke writes "ChessBrain.net broke the world's record for 'largest number of distributed computers used to play a single game' by holding a chess match between Danish GM Peter Heine Nielsen and the equivalent of SETI@home (which similarly, has some people looking for a Mate). 2070 CPU's from 56 countries aided Black by running the chess program Beowulf, including a couple of University clusters. Their supernode ran Linux, and MySQL. The game was relayed by FICS. Results can be viewed here(1) and here(2)." -
Kasparov vs. The World: It's all different
Faber@FICS writes "I just checked how the match Kasparov vs. The World has been covered here. Today, more than fifty moves into the game, it is interesting that nearly everything that was said about this has been shown to be wrong. (1) This was no easy win for GK at all -- quality chess at its best, with very good drawing chances for the world after fifty moves. (2) Computers, although heavily used all over the net, did not play a significant role in this game so far. (3) This is no longer Windows-only -- Microsoft removed that requirement rather early in the game without comment. Surprise, surprise...
