Re:Can we run servers yet?
I was reading some of the AUP for UK ADSL ISPs. They basically say: Do what you want.
From freedom2surf
What restrictions do you place on your service? None, except of course that we require no illegal use! We block no ports, we do not restrict bandwidth or traffic (excluding our Connect and Connect Lite products - see Comparision Chart for details), we do not practice transparent caching, we do not specify what hardware you use, or how many machines you connect to our service. -
Had this problem about a fortnight ago...
So I contacted my ISP's technical support, and they added reverse lookup support as standard on all their packages. Its nice to know that there are companies that'll go that extra mile. Note that I am a home user on f2s's cheapest subscription, and it took less than 24 hours from my enquiry to full support.

Re:Broadband in UKThree nitpicks:
Basic UK ADSL is 512/256, basic cable is 512/128. Both can go to 1024 or 2048 downstream if you're willing to pay
BT is required by competition law to keep the consumer and wholesale parts of its business separate, so you can't really buy "direct from BT" unless you're an ISP. And BT's own ADSL offering is pretty poor.
30 pounds/month is pretty much the upper limit for ADSL. My own provider freedom2surf costs 22.50, and is fast, reliable and totally unrestricted.

Re:Americans think they're special
The thing is... you don't get those to yourselves. The
.US domain has a place on the net now more than ever, as the .net .org .com .edu's are being used globally rather than just by the US!
You're right about the US not settling for a .US domain, but it seems that some non-US sites are also not settling!
For example:
http://telstra.com/ & http://www.telstra.net/ - An Australian Telco
http://apcmag.com/ - An Australian PC Mag.
http://www.freedom2surf.net/ & http://www.f2s.com/ - An English ISP.

Re:Road trips in UK?What ISPs should I look at? What size area do ISPs cover in the country?
The UK is full of free national ISPs. They typically offer free web space, web or IMAP/POP3 based email and a national dialup number charged at local rates. I'd recommend one to which you can subscribe before you leave, such as Freedom 2 Surf, who I've been using for many years now. They run a lot on Linux and are generally Unix friendly.
Do hotels have phone jacks?
Some do. You may find a lot of digital exchanges, though, where you'll probably be out of luck. Also, bear in mnd that local calls in the UK are not free, and the hotel will add their own extortionate overhead on top of that. Be sure to check the prices in advance.
Can I get one that will work in France as well?
Compuserve. My sister spends half the year in France and half in the UK, and Compuserve is the only one we could find that gives local call access in both countries. Many ISPs are part of the iPass global roaming scheme which allows local call access from most places around the world. However, the cost of access from outside of the ISPs native country makes it prohibitively expensive for any serious work.
