Re:News For Nerds
Have you ever tried Freshnews or OSNews? Freshnews is great to find other things to read when
/. is full of the "ooohhh shiny!" articles, and OSNews is sadly a lot like what /. used to be, with nearly every story being geeky tech. I have to agree though that /. seems to be hanging a hard left away from geek stuff and more hardcore tech and more into the oooohhh shiny, or worse like TFA stuff designed to get a nice liberal VS conservative flamewar going. If I wanted politics and flamewars over same I'd be hanging at Huffpo. -
Roland, here comes your killerYes, first of all, I am kinda jealous that when I submitted the same story on April 28, it got rejected and to my shock today, its in!!
Well,
/. submission FAQ warns about such a thing and asks me not to get pissed but to blame my stars, so I was mentally prepared for this.. but this Ronald unmasking brought an interesting thing..what if one constantly sees a site like freshnews, would it not increase the probability of a story getting posted.. I mean it has all sites from cnet to techdirt to porn-tech site like madville, you name it they have it..
and then there are tech mags like nature, newscientist and trnmag, which have good articles.. so how can such a situation be tackled? or how does accepting of articles get streamlined and give a fair chance to all? I agree that it also depends upon the way the article is submitted instead of just sending the link and a line..

Re:How it this news?
Yes yes, but, despite the "news for nerds" tagline, Slashdot is really more of a dicussion site than a news site. If you really just want the latest in tech news, try someplace like http://freshnews.org/ where you can get everything consolidated into a nice digest for you, including the ancient slashdot headlines. If you want a discussion forum for geek chatting, stupid memes, repetitive jokes and overall fun, then read slashdot.
Personally, despite some of the crap on slashdot, I still stick around, mostly for the commentary and the interesting angles I find other people view things from.

my daily routine..
- Slashdot... Hardly a surprise here..
- Freshnews.. I really like this news aggregator site, from there, I usually scan OReilly, Kuro5hin, Ars and a few other sites they feature for interesting articles and visit if the title seems interesting..
- Use Perl.. Top 10 journals, mostly
- Google news.. This replaced visits to BBC, CNN and a few others
- Freshmeat.. and a few other shareware sites from time to time
- Joel on Software.. and a few more blogs, like Scripting
- Trillian, Phoenix, Apache and a few more software sites for possible updates...
- Webmail accounts

Re:I got a kewl domain name for my wife..!Ohhhh.. a bug report..
It did accept your post, but couldn't add anything to the ultramode.txt file. So yeah; it doesn't actually matter unless freshnews.org decide to syndicate us, but I think it's fixed now.

Actually I did find cheesy portal. I like http://www.freshnews.org/ better for that.
