Possibly Salt Evaporation
Some folks on hackernews have suggested it could be a massive salt or mineral collection operation. Not sure myself, but here is the comparison shots.

Re:Autism: The new fad in personality disorders
the town i live in has a lot of "troubled youth" schools. i'm fairly familiar with the acting-up kid circuit.
that AC is actually right more than you know. the punks come in 2 kinds: the actual punks; and kids who've barely acted out (or even not at all) and their upwardly mobile parents didn't have the time/patience/interest to expend so they pay $$$ to have their kid locked up.
you could come see this first hand by working at any of the MANY fine establishments... there is such a massive market here because of the sheer number of California yuppies who have no idea what to do with their kids. it is an inconvenience to them, so they outsource.
i'm sure you won't change your opinion on this matter, but this is the truth.

Re:openstreetmap.org
We used to use Bing, but their non-US maps are generally worse than Google's, who also localise them:

Don't read Japanese? No luck with Bing then.
So we switched.

Re:America the lucky country
We make governments to protect our rights. When our governments are filled with people who don't do anything, that is by design: the design of the people who damage our rights. While governments dither and deadlock, corporate people are robbing and damaging us. Every day corporate teams produce new ways to attack us, which requires government diligence that has failed miserably.
Rather than applaud from a distance, you should go to an Occupy Australia demonstration. This is direct action that you support - in principle. The more people support that action in person the more it will mean. It's the next step away from representative democracy. And since that last step is a sham, it's the closest step to it you can take. Just do it. BTW, it's a lot of fun, and the despair you might have (but might not even feel - yet) shrinks in good company.

Re:That small?
Which direction are neutrinos traveling in reference to the earth's rotation? Could something like that affect the results? I imagine it's the same (on a very tiny scale) as to run down in electric stairs that are going down. Let's see: http://g.co/maps/m8wky. I'm curious can anyone elaborate?
Also, thats awfully close to the earthquake struck city of L'Aquila, I hope no Italian get this news because if theres a quake there in the following days the CERN scientist risk getting charged with manslaughter

Re:Windows, duh!
Here's a new (4 years old or so) Costco, which has even more skylights:

Re:Windows, duh!
I have shopped at Walmarts enough to actually see the difference in architecture over the years. About 8-10 years ago, they began installing skylights in all new buildings along with light sensors that turn the store lights on (progressively, I might add) depending on the solar light level. They typically do not retrofit an older store. On a sunny day such as today the fluorescent lights will not be on. FWIW, Costco is doing the same thing.
By the way, they're not making it as bright as outside, nowhere close. The skylights cover maybe 1/20th of the surface of the roof and yet provide normal indoor lighting during periods of direct sunlight. See here to get an idea:
The little bumps in a diamond pattern are the skylights.

Yes because it is much better to send somebody a URL that looks like this:
Instead of using the shortener.
