Gaia Online since 2007
Gaia Online has sold "Gaia Cash" cards at Target for nearly three years now - which are used exclusively to buy low-res pixel items for your low-res avatar, for up tp $10 (1000 Gaia Cash) an item. The Facebook games seem like a good deal in comparison. http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/featured-announcements/gaia-cash-cards-at-target-stores/t.33551403/

Re:Yay New Features
With the rate of advancement in The GIMP, eventually, Photoshop enthusiasts will have nothing bad to really say about it. It was always about no cmyk, no 32 bit color support, no adjustment layers. It looks like some of these things may be coming in future.
CinePaint aka Film Gimp has had 32 bit colour depths for a while. While it doesn't have cmyk support it's being worked on. From what I could find though it doesn't have adjustment layers either.
Oh, I wanted to share these graphics of Gimp and Photoshop being depicted as Swiss Arm Knives

Re:PHP and professional in the same sentence?
I am pretty sure PHP can do more than just web guestbooks. You know, little things, like running Friendster, Yahoo, and GAIA Online. I've also run apps like the OSS Horde/IMP web-based mail front-end with tens of thousands of users. I reuse PHP code all the time. And if you add in some of the code optimizers and server accelerators, you can really make PHP sing.
You also wrote, "Thanks for wasting years of my life and teaching me bad programming habits, PHP." Which bad habits would that be? There are good and bad ways of writing PHP, just like there are with ANY computer language.

Popular sites configs
This page shows the server specifications for some of the busiest message boards on the internet, along with what software they use. You'll see the configurations are quite disparate, from the 90+ servers serving the anime fans at Gaia Online on 100% open source software, to the sometimes single server hosting some of the other top 50 forums.

This applies to all on-line communities
A lot of what he says in the article applies to all on-line communities. Prodigy, Compuserve, AOL, they all suffer from this ebb and flow of oldbies and newbies. One case in point is this community Gaia Online. It's a simple world built around phpBB with some clever avatar scripting built in (among other things). It's currently still in beta but has suffered through various periods of transition where oldbies will up and leave, exhibiting the same behavior as the author stated in his article.
