Re:Great!
How about from Atlanta Georgia.

Actually...
If he had a cellphone, this could really screw things up.
Here in Atlanta, in whatever traffic condition, jam, whatever it is, you will STILL see someone on a cellular phone, weaving and going about 90MPH.
By the way, Atlanta is already well-covered. Lots of people whom I know make use of this map. I wonder what the GDOT could have up their sleeves with this project. -

Re:Seattle has had something like this for ages
http://www.georgia-navigator.com
Honestly - when these stories come up, why does it seem like such a big deal? It seems like the DOTs of major metropolitan areas have had these kinds of systems in place for years now. I regularly use GA's to check traffic before I leave work and you can even see the views from the traffic camera's mounted along the highways. They also have accident types and expected time to clean up. -
roads? where we're going we don't need roads.
www.georgia-navigator.com is a great way to find out problems along Georgia's roads.
Retrofitting all cars with GPS navigation, even if it were free, wouldn't clear up traffic troubles, it would just clog up every alternate route. -
Atlanta Area
The Atlanta area has had something similar for awhile. It's pretty handy if you want to check traffic on your way home.
Plus, you can modify the map to display the locations of traffic cameras around the area. When you click a camera, it shows you the current view from that camera.
It's a pretty nifty system. -

nothing new...
Atlanta's traffic Sure it is not in pretty flash, but is is much more extensive.

Re:2000 cameras a day
One of the nice things that came out of the 1996 Olympics was a traffic management center (which is staffed 9a-4p M-F, but that's another boondoggle). As part of it they put up a network of cameras and radars to monitor traffic on the major highways and some of the major intersections. You can see the results here.
It's really nifty - you can click on any camera to see the current conditions, click on digital signs to see what they're displaying, see the current speeds being reported by the radar guns (and click on them too), and so forth.
This is particularly useful for a city with some of the worst traffic in the US. -
Re:Why is this under 'privacy'?Try looking up a bit more often. You're going to be shocked at how often you are on camera these days.
Amen. I'm on camera upwards of 30 times a day...
You want cameras? I got your freakin' cameras.
