We have had no end of trouble with our DSL service, and I put the blame squarely on Pacific Bell. Our ISP (Internet Express) and DSL provider (Covad) are on the hook every time PacBell decides to monkey with the physical lines in our neighborhood -- and PacBell is always monkeying with the lines, because our neighborhood is in the heart of Silicon Valley and PacBell has been tragically under-maintaining their infrastructure in the face of the Internet explosion. (Might PacBell also be deliberately f*cking with Covad customers, to get them to try PacBell's own competing DSL service? You'd have to be paranoid to think something like that, wouldn't you?)

While I don't really care for UF as much as I used to, it's still nice to see an online comic getting some mainstream publishing so that non-onliners can even pick it up. I think the biggest problem today with online comics that are published in bookform is that they are not mainstream, but self-published or published by small houses like Plan Nine. I'd love to be able to walk into my local Barnes&Noble and pick up a copy of Goats, PVP, PLIF, or GPF.

I do not currently subscribe to the Post up here at WVU. I get most of my news from slashdot, or other internet sites. I get a lot of it from word of mouth. Sometimes I watch the news while I do homework.

The one paper that I do read is the Daily Atheneum, which I probably spelled wrong, since only freshmen refer to it as anything other than the DA.

I read it to get campus news, and local stuff that I don't find online. Pretty often, nothing is happening. I don't really give 2 shits about who is going to be elected to student government, especially since they are pretty much powerless. A recent poll revealed that about 4% of WVU students voted in the last election, a reflection of the mighty power wielded by the pretty boy frat guys that win this popularity contest.

My point is. Unless there is real local news, there isn't really much point in reading the paper anymore. I read the DA about once a month, when I find a copy on the floor of one of my less interesting lectures.

Stuff that I care about, I can read on the net, and when it's covered in the papers, it's usually covered wrong anyways. Y2K was a great example of that one.

I'll read the comics, if I have time... Goats and Userfriendly that is.

I think the difference is that most of the best comics these days are being put up on the web, and the artists aren't getting paid for it (at least not much...)

See Goats, Sluggy Freelance, User Friendly (though that one's not restricted to the web..)

there are a lot of other "hobby" strips out there - ComicSites lists bajillions of them.

Of course, I miss Bloom County, Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, the Far Side..... But so do we all..

Fixed so far:

Dropped http MaxClients down to 75
increased mysql max_connections to to 250

(they were 150 & 100, so we had 450 http forks fighting for 100 mysql connections. Oops! Thank god for load testing! I guess its problably good that I post another story just so that we can simulate normal Slashdot a little better: Slashdot doesn't usually have just 1 story with people posting on (well, unless we mention evolution or the GPL being violated or something) (Oh, and don't post comments with bug reports, there is no way I'll be able to keep up, email 'em. I won't reply, but I'll read it)

So here it is: A mirror of Slashdot (as of a week or so ago). It exists now for testing: So feel free to post comments and help test the new load balancer. For the curious, the new system has 3 http machines (P2s) and one mysql box (a dual P2) with a load balancer trying to keep everyone all equally busy. And its about time: the old setup has been really stressed out trying to keep up with everyone. Anyway, don't get to attached to any of your comments here, when we're satisfied that the new setup is stable, I'm gonna mirror over Slashdot and make the final switcheroo.

He's talking about hand-held radar systems police can use to detect breathing, beating hearts or other motion through walls and other obstacles. Sounds like a declassified version of the Ground Support Radar [GSR] units we used years ago in the Army. I can see why police would want them, and I can also see why Bram considers them a privacy threat. Depends on how they're used, I suppose.
