Glassbook reader is an Embedded version of Acrobat Reader + the EBX_HANDLER plug in + the other EBX stuff (http://www.ebxwg.com), all wrapped up in a weak little Interlok by Pace Anti-Piracy - 14 years with their heads up their ass bundle. You will eventually get a 40bit standard PDF key (you can find the PDFSPEC.PDF file somewhere on the Adobe web page).
Softlock is similar, using a plug-in, with a filter instead of an encryption method. Fortunately for the budding hacker, Softlock doesn't use anything that disables your pirated copy of SoftIce, so you can rip out the 56-bit DES password very easily., and use LibDES (softlock isn't too proud to steal the OpenSSL code base, might as well use it yourself). I expect that Softlock will get in trouble with the FTC or whomever for exporting their plug-in.
Both systems use some variant of public key to encrypt the symmetric key for the document. Who cares -- some kid can buy all the books with a stolen credit card and distribute them on some IRC channel. Once obtained, you save the document out and you no longer have to worry about the encumbrance of Softlock or Glassbook.
